Job Description
Assistant Project Manager (Traffic Engineer)Position Overview We are seeking an Assistant Project Manager with a traffic engineering background to support delivery of roadway and transportation projects. The successful candidate will combine technical traffic engineering expertise with project management support to plan, design, and deliver traffic studies and roadway improvements on schedule and within budget. This role involves coordinating with clients, preparing technical designs and reports, tracking project progress, and mentoring junior staff.
Key ResponsibilitiesSupport project managers in planning, scoping, budgeting, and scheduling traffic and roadway engineering projects.
Perform traffic engineering analyses including capacity studies, signal warrant analyses, traffic impact studies, and corridor operations assessments.
Prepare and review traffic design plans, signing and pavement marking plans, signal plans, and intersection design details.
Coordinate project deliverables, resources, and subcontractors to ensure timely completion and quality control.
Develop and review technical reports, memos, and deliverables for clients and permitting agencies.
Attend client meetings, public outreach sessions, and coordination with local agencies to present findings and respond to comments.
Track project budgets, schedules, and progress; prepare status reports and assist with invoicing and change orders.
Mentor and review work of junior engineers and technicians; delegate tasks and provide technical guidance.
Ensure designs and deliverables comply with applicable standards, codes, and agency requirements (AASHTO, MUTCD, local DOT guidelines).QualificationsBachelors degree in civil engineering, transportation engineering, or a related field.3+ years of professional experience in traffic engineering or roadway design; experience in a consulting environment preferred.
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required; Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or working toward PE.Demonstrated experience with traffic analysis tools (e.g., Synchro, VISSIM, HCS), CAD (MicroStation or AutoCAD), and GIS.Strong knowledge of traffic engineering principles, signal design, signing and pavement marking, and roadway geometric design.
Experience assisting with project management tasks including scope development, scheduling, budgeting, and client communication.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; experience preparing technical reports and presenting to stakeholders.
Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
Valid drivers license and ability to perform occasional field work and traffic observations.
