This internship is ideal for students seeking to build foundational engineering skills while learning how traffic and transportation systems support safe, efficient mobility and long-term infrastructure planning within a growing community. About the Role The Traffic Engineering Intern supports the Traffic & Transportation Department in evaluating and improving traffic operations and safety throughout the Town. This position provides hands-on experience in data collection, analysis, and project coordination while working under the supervision of a professional engineer. The intern will gain exposure to real-world transportation projects, including traffic studies, signal systems, and safety initiatives. This role is ideal for students looking to apply classroom knowledge in a practical municipal setting while developing technical, analytical, and communication skills. Perform traffic data collection activities such as traffic volume counts, speed studies, pedestrian counts, and traffic signal inventories under the supervision of an engineer. Assist in preparing project exhibits, maps, and supporting documentation. Attend and participate in engineering meetings, public meetings, and training sessions. Collaborate with Traffic & Transportation staff on ongoing and upcoming projects. Support general engineering and administrative tasks as assigned. Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering program. Basic knowledge of transportation engineering principles and practices. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Adobe. Experience with traffic engineering software (e.g., Synchro, Vissim) is a plus.
