Job Description

We're looking for an experienced engineer to support and lead the development of traffic signal designs, ITS infrastructure, electrical details, and broadband fiber plans. This position will sit within our Traffic/ITS team and can be based out of either our Hillsborough or Raleigh office. The work will primarily focus on state roadway/highway projects, along with municipal street improvements, pedestrian infrastructure, and fiber/broadband design efforts in Virginia.
Responsibilities:
Lead and contribute to the development of traffic signal plans, ITS layouts, and broadband fiber designsSupport state DOT roadway/highway projects along with municipal and pedestrian-focused initiativesApply a strong understanding of state signal design standards, MUTCD requirements, and industry best practicesConduct field reviews, equipment inventories, construction observations, and site assessmentsCoordinate directly with clients, agencies, and project stakeholders; occasional participation in public meetings and presentations
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related disciplineAt least 5 years of progressive experience in transportation or traffic designProficiency in MicroStation, OpenRoads, Geopak, and corridor modeling toolsProfessional Engineer (PE) license in NC or ability to obtain within six months (multi‑state licensure a plus)Prior experience with state DOTs (NCDOT, VDOT) preferredStrong foundation in traffic engineering: TIA/capacity analysis, signal timing, signing, pavement marking, and general traffic operationsExcellent communication skills, strong initiative, and ability to manage workload effectivelyExperience with client coordination, project management, and project development workflowsSolid engineering judgment and ability to maintain schedules and budgetsValid driver's license and ability to travel for field activities
