The Resident Engineer will serve as the primary field representative for the owner, agency, or client and will be responsible for managing field inspection staff, coordinating with contractors and stakeholders, monitoring project progress, ensuring compliance with contract requirements, and supporting the successful delivery of complex infrastructure projects. This position may support projects for agencies including MTA, NJ TRANSIT, PANYNJ, Amtrak, NYSDOT, NJDOT, and municipal clients. Key ResponsibilitiesConstruction Management & Oversight Serve as the primary field representative for the owner/client during construction. Manage day-to-day construction activities and monitor contractor performance. Ensure work is performed in accordance with contract documents, plans, specifications, permits, and applicable regulations. Monitor project schedule, quality, safety, and budget performance. Coordinate field activities among contractors, utilities, agencies, consultants, and stakeholders. Contract Administration Review and evaluate contractor requests, RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and change orders. Verify quantities for progress payments and contract modifications. Assist with claims evaluation, schedule reviews, and dispute resolution. Maintain project correspondence and contract documentation. Team Leadership Supervise inspectors, field engineers, and support staff. Assign inspection responsibilities and monitor staff performance. Provide mentoring, coaching, and technical guidance to project personnel. Ensure consistent reporting and documentation practices across the project team. Quality Assurance Verify construction activities comply with approved plans, specifications, and contract requirements. Review inspection reports, testing results, and quality documentation. Coordinate with quality managers and testing laboratories. Monitor corrective actions and resolution of non-conforming work. Safety Oversight Promote a strong safety culture on the project site. Monitor contractor compliance with project safety requirements. Participate in safety meetings, audits, and site inspections. Report and track safety concerns, incidents, and corrective actions. Stakeholder Coordination Attend and lead project meetings with contractors, owners, designers, utilities, and community stakeholders. Prepare and present project status updates. Coordinate service interruptions, utility relocations, and public impacts. Support public outreach and stakeholder engagement activities when required. Documentation and Reporting Review and approve daily reports, inspection reports, and field documentation. Prepare weekly and monthly progress reports. Maintain accurate project records and documentation. Support project closeout, punch list completion, and final acceptance activities. QualificationsEducation Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, or related field preferred. Experience Minimum 10 years of construction management, inspection, or infrastructure project experience. Minimum 5 years serving in a Resident Engineer, Assistant Resident Engineer, Construction Manager, or equivalent leadership role. Experience on transportation, transit, rail, stations, tunnels, bridges, roadway, utility, or public infrastructure projects preferred. Experience working with public agencies such as MTA, NJ TRANSIT, PANYNJ, NYSDOT, NJDOT, Amtrak, or similar owners preferred. Certifications One or more of the following preferred: Professional Engineer (PE) NICET Certification ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certified Construction Manager (CCM) PMP Certification Knowledge and Skills Strong knowledge of construction management principles and contract administration. Ability to interpret plans, specifications, schedules, and contract requirements. Experience managing inspection teams and contractor coordination. Familiarity with public agency construction procedures and documentation requirements. Excellent communication, leadership, negotiation, and problem-solving skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Primavera P6, Procore, e-Builder, or similar project management software. Typical compensation ranges:
Resident Engineer:
$120,000•160,000 annually
Senior Resident Engineer:
$160,000•190,000 annually
Contract Assignments:
