About WSDOT The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is a multimodal agency with a global reputation for excellence. Our dedicated workforce plans, designs, builds, and operates an integrated transportation system that safely and efficiently moves people and goods throughout the state. In addition to maintaining over 20,000 lane miles of state highway and 4,100 bridges, WSDOT leads an award-winning Active Transportation Plan, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and operates the largest ferry system in the nation! The Opportunity WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Engineer 3 for our South-Central Region Design Office in Union Gap! This position supports the agency mission by serving as a Design Squad Leader in the Design Project Engineering Office. As a Squad Leader, this position may supervise and/or direct the work of a whole squad that contains an assortment of Transportation Engineer 1's & 2's, Transportation Technician 2's & 3's, consultants, non-permanent, and intern employees. The work produced by the squad may include project scoping, design documentation, and Plans, Specification & Estimate packages. This position has a significant influence on supporting and guiding the design team members to produce work that is in line with the WSDOT's Strategic Plan. What to Expect The incumbent will have to travel to an occasional off-site meeting, attend training, or collect field Data. Field duties may occasionally require the ability to maneuver equipment up to 40 pounds individually or assist with maneuvering equipment up to 70 pounds. Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will: Lead the design squad in the preparation of design documentation, right of way plans, access control plans, project plans, specifications, and estimates. Coordinate the necessary project design work of headquarters and region support groups, as well as design input from outside of WSDOT resource agencies. Write new project special provisions. Design new intersections, interchanges, or improvements to existing ones. Design of project hydraulic features. Design horizontal and vertical roadway alignments using CAD software. Train and mentor squad members in procedures, standards, and other aspects relating to the squad duties and functions. Prepare and conduct employee development and performance plans. Monitor and report the progress of schedules and budgets. Prepare for, schedule, conduct, or assist in various meetings. Oversee preparation for public open houses and access control hearings. Engineering Knowledge:
Demonstrated experience applying engineering principles, methods, and practices to project management in transportation or construction environments. This includes expertise in design development, construction techniques, and/or contract administration.Project & Design Oversight:
Ability to oversee and review engineering designs and documentation to ensure accuracy, compliance with standards, and constructability, while supervising the preparation of plans, specifications, and cost estimates.Technical & Digital Proficiency:
Advanced skills in operating Windows-based systems and engineering software, including MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, SharePoint, Outlook), MS Teams, computer-aided engineering applications, cloud-based platforms, and system databases for project tracking and information management.Communication Skills:
Advanced skills in professional communication, specifically in communicating technical information effectively and professionally to a diverse audience, including those with non-technical backgrounds, virtually, by phone, and in person.Leadership & Supervision:
Skills to lead and supervise a diverse workforce by fostering collaboration across boundaries, building and maintaining effective teams, coaching and mentoring staff and encouraging engagement and professional growth. Vehicle Operation forFieldwork :
Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to operate state-owned vehicles for travel to and between project sites in support of field duties and essential job functions.Growth Mindset:

Demonstrated understanding of civil, structural, geotechnical, soil mechanics, traffic, or transportation engineering principles and their application to real-world projects.Professional Certification & Regulatory Compliance:
Possession of an Engineer in Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license, with the ability to apply professional standards, ethical practices, and regulatory requirements in engineering work.Project Management & Coordination:
Proven ability to manage and deliver multiple projects simultaneously, coordinating across diverse engineering disciplines, internal support teams, stakeholders, and local agencies.Plan Review & Technical Interpretation:
Demonstrated skill in reviewing and accurately interpreting engineering plans, specifications, and construction documents, and assessing compliance with established standards and requirements.CADD & Design Software Proficiency:
