The Opportunity Washington State Ferries (WSF), a division of the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), is currently seeking a motivated Engineering Intern to support the System Electrification Program, a critical initiative advancing the modernization and sustainability of Washington's ferry fleet and terminal infrastructure. This paid internship offers a unique opportunity to work alongside marine engineering professionals and contribute to projects that support safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible ferry operations. The intern will assist with engineering documentation, program coordination, and project support activities that help keep electrification efforts on schedule and aligned with statewide transportation goals. This role provides valuable hands-on experience while directly contributing to WSF's mission of delivering dependable ferry service and advancing the future of clean maritime transportation. What to Expect Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you/the Transportation Engineer Intern will: Assist with preparation of contractual and engineering documentation. Support development of monthly program update briefing materials and draft/format correspondence. Support design review activities under supervision. Assist with planning and coordination of site visits and meetings; take and organize meeting minutes. Support project schedule tracking and documentation to help maintain the smooth functioning of the Electrification Program. Assist Terminal and Vessel Electrification Marine Engineers with onsite activities, including site visits, observations, and commissioning support under direct supervision. Attend meetings and participate in project teams or committees as assigned. Qualifications To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required :
Education:
Completion of at least two semesters or three quarters (or equivalent) of study in a Bachelor's program in Electrical, Mechanical or Civil Engineering at an accredited college or university.Technical Knowledge:
Understanding of engineering principles and practices. Study emphasis in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, or related field.Analytical Thinking:

Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth. It is preferred that qualified candidates also have: Construction/Engineering Work Experience. Completion of three years of study in a College/University engineering discipline. Experience with either mechanical or electrical industrial equipment. Important Notes This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs. This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options. The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County. In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements . Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
