Job Description

At Sumter Construction, performs inspection work on highway and bridge construction projects in areas of asphalt placement on road projects. Monitors placement rates, temperatures, rolling procedures, and traffic control operation to SCDOT plans and specifications. Prepares all necessary paperwork required as project inspector. This includes preparation of daily work reports, final construction plans, asphalt roadway reports, and taking wage interviews. Performs inspection duties on construction projects for items not requiring certification such as pavement markings, grassing, etc. Assists and trains in performing inspection duties on construction projects in areas of concrete placement, and performing all required field tests to include checking slump and sir content of concrete as well as making test cylinders and obtaining necessary samples of materials ensuring compliance with SCDOT plans and specifications. Verifies field quantities for pay estimates. Performs survey party duties as needed. This includes assisting in all phases of construction layout items such as rodman, instrument operator, and keeping notes. Assists in the staking of right-of-way, curb and gutter, catch basins, drainage pipes, etc. Performs traffic control and erosion control inspections on assigned projects and completes the necessary paperwork. A high school diploma and one (1) year of experience that is related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position requires driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise. May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
