This position performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Essential Duties:
Essential duties for a Transportation Engineer I, II, III, or IV includes:

Assists in overseeing construction project traffic control plans; periodically reviews traffic control devices with Area Engineers.

Assists in overseeing contracts, issuing work orders and monitoring construction schedules and contractor payments and job progress on construction projects.

Develops and reviews engineering related documents, correspondence, reports and remediation plans.

Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support.

Monitors contractors' compliance with plans and specifications.

Performs engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.

Resolves differences between contractors and inspectors.

Reviews shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements and change order requests.

Coordinates with others to develop, monitor and update integrated project plans and schedules to ensure projects are executed in the most efficient manner possible.

Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Additional essential duties for a Transportation Engineer II, III, or IV includes:

Assists Area Engineers with construction contract administration matters.

Analyzes and assists in the resolution of contract problems and disputes.

Conducts pre-construction meetings and public hearings.

Additional essential duties for a Transportation Engineer III or IV includes:

Develops plans for the Project Managers related to resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and procurement, while utilizing available resources and maintaining the agency's project objectives.

Reviews shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures.

Additional essential duties for a Transportation Engineer IV includes:

Analyzes schedule trends, determines risks and recommends options to management for corrective action for highly complex projects.

Conducts final inspections on completed construction projects.

Leads/Trains professional and administrative staff.

Responsible for the review of construction related to operations.
