Temporary Extra Help--Engineering Services (Traffic)

Whatcom County Public Works Department, Engineering Services, will hire 1 temporary employee for summer 2026, to be assigned primarily to install traffic counters on roadways throughout Whatcom County. Additional duties will include field verification of signage & striping, sight distance, and roadway data, under the direction of the engineering technicians, throughout Whatcom County. Other duties include data entry, filing, and generation of statistical reports from data collected.

Working Conditions :

Work is performed in field locations throughout Whatcom County and in an office setting at a computer workstation. Drives a motor vehicle. Works outdoors in all types of weather, traverses rough terrain and inclines. Uses appropriate safety equipment and follows established safety policies, practices and procedures with particular attention to roadway dangers. Requires the ability to pound nails into roadways for traffic counts and lift up to 50 pounds.

Length of Position:

This position could begin in early May and will be approximately 40 hours per week. Start and end date may vary dependent on candidate availability. Students are encouraged to apply. Application Special Instructions

Rate of Pay:

$21.60 per hour Must be proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel. Familiarity with basic engineering technology, principles and procedures is preferred. Requires the ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Must be eligible to cross between the United States and Canada, at time of hire and throughout employment. Background check must meet County criteria. Must have a driving record that meets County standards and possess a valid driver's license at time of hire and throughout employment.
