PURPOSE The Engineering Technician V provides project management oversight for field survey crews and prepares designs for street and alleyway paving projects.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Plan Design and Preparation Prepare field plans and surveys for existing grades and locations. Design and prepare paving plans for all streets and alleys under the City's jurisdiction. Design and prepare plans for special streetscape treatments, traffic calming and alignment. Design major arterials for state and federally aided projects. Prepare paving and traffic calming estimates and assessments for designs. Measure completed work for sewer and street projects. Prepare certificates of completed street construction work, showing quantities of work completed. Review and approve permit impact on the City of Milwaukee Right of Way. Collaborate with Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) and Geographic Information System (GIS) Technicians for plan preparation. Project Management Coordinate, direct, plan and organize the activities of a field crew. Train and support engineering technicians in field work and design related to traffic calming and paving. The Engineering Technician V must be willing and able to do the following: Stand, walk, climb, crouch, crawl, push and pull, and perform repetitive motions. Wear appropriate safety equipment, including safety shoes, glasses, and hearing protection. Withstand variable indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, such as temperature changes, rain, and snow. Perform medium physical activity, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 00 pounds of force frequently to move objects.The pre-employment medical tests include:
Physical Exam Vision Exam Audio-GramMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 1.
Associate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university, AND three years of surveying and transportation design engineering experience. OR Five years of surveying and transportation design engineering experience. 2. Valid driver's license and good driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered; however, there is no substitution for three years of related work experience.NOTICE:

Technical Knowledge of surveying standards and procedures. Knowledge of street and alley design criteria. Ability to use survey equipment, including total station, data collector, level/leveling rod and engineering tape. Knowledge of and proficient use of MicroStation and/or Civil 3D drafting software. Ability to effectively use computer programs such as the Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of street design criteria, codes, and design techniques. Skill in the preparation of cost estimates and assessments. Ability to produce and interpret detailed and accurate technical drawings and documents. Ability to read and apply work-related materials, such as governmental regulations and City ordinances. Project Management Knowledge of project management practices. Ability to use and analyze information to evaluate options and determine the best solution. Ability to plan, organize, and work on multiple projects, independently managing priorities and deadlines. Ability to set clear expectations, manage staff by providing guidance, and ensure projects meet expectations and deadlines. Ability to act in a lead capacity to manage, train, and guide others to ensure adherence to project specifications and safety protocols. Ability to maintain accurate records. Interpersonal and Communication Verbal communication skills to effectively communicate with other staff members and management. Written communication skills, including the ability to write technical reports and general business correspondence. Ability to work cooperatively, effectively, and fairly with coworkers and residents whose backgrounds may differ from one's own. Honesty, integrity and the ability to use City resources responsibly.CURRENT SALARY
The current salary range (Pay Range 3UN) is $72,510-$92,244 annually, and the current resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $75,410-$95,934 annually. Appointment above the minimum is possible based upon level of experience and other qualifications, and is subject to approval.BENEFITS
