Position Summary:
The Head of Quality is responsible for leading the Quality Assurance function across assigned U. S. Steel Tubular Products operations. This role provides strategic and operational leadership to ensure product quality, customer satisfaction, regulatory compliance, and effective execution of the Quality Management System. The manager oversees quality engineering, quality control, auditing, lab testing oversight, and process improvement activities while fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and technical excellence. The position partners closely with Operations, Product Engineering, Technical Services, and Commercial teams to maintain product integrity and drive continuous improvement across all quality-related processes.
Responsibilities:
Lead the Quality Assurance organization, including quality engineers, technicians, inspectors, and lab personnel, ensuring consistent execution of quality processes and standards. Oversee compliance with
ISO 9001, API
Q1, and applicable
API/ASTM/NACE/ISO
product standards, ensuring robust documentation and audit readiness. Review customer specifications and ensure quality requirements are effectively translated into manufacturing and inspection processes. Provide technical and metallurgical guidance to Operations, support rejection analysis, and drive improvements in process capability, testing accuracy, and product conformity. Direct internal quality audits, manage corrective and preventive actions, and ensure closure of findings across all applicable areas. Monitor quality KPIs, analyze process and product data, prepare quality performance reports, and present findings to senior leadership. Oversee testing laboratory operations in coordination with lab managers or supervisors, ensuring reliable results, equipment calibration, and adherence to testing standards. Support customer interactions related to quality concerns, specifications, nonconformance resolutions, and product performance inquiries. Partner with Product Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering to evaluate quality risks, support new product realization, and ensure inspection/measurement requirements are properly defined. Lead quality improvement initiatives, including root cause analysis, statistical methods, and structured problem-solving approaches. Build strong Cross functional relationships and effectively communicate quality expectations across all levels of the organization. Foster a culture aligned with U. S. Steel's mission, values, and success model, emphasizing safe work practices and high ethical standards.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related technical field. 20+ years of experience in Quality Assurance or Quality Control within steel, metals, or heavy industrial manufacturing; experience with tubular products preferred. Demonstrated experience in steelmaking, casting, seamless tube rolling and heat treatment. 10+ years of proven leadership experience managing technical teams in a manufacturing or quality environment. Strong working knowledge of
ISO 9001, API
Q1, and related
API/ASTM/NACE
quality and product standards. Demonstrated experience with internal auditing, corrective action processes, and managing quality management systems. Strong problem solving, analytical, and decision-making skills with the ability to interpret metallurgical and mechanical test data. Experience in managing teams and budgets for multiple locations.
