Position Details ICO Energy and Engineering seeks a results-driven, experienced engineer with strong planning and organizational skills and a detail-oriented character. The ability to work effectively with others, as well as work independently, are essential traits to succeed in the role of Mechanical/Commissioning Engineer . A pursuit of continuous self-improvement and the desire to work within an entrepreneurial setting are critical to becoming a team member of ICO Energy and Engineering, Inc. The Mechanical/Commissioning Engineer works closely with an integrated team to support clients throughout the Northeast on building commissioning, retro-commissioning, and monitoring-based commissioning efforts for both new construction and existing facilities. This position focuses primarily on commissioning, with supporting work in energy engineering (building energy audits, focused energy studies, and energy modeling) as projects require. All efforts will typically require on-site activities, including field verification of installations, witnessing of equipment startup and functional performance testing, and field measurement of variable parameters. Responsibilities will include leading selected projects with the support of Senior Engineers, This position requires the ability to integrate design theory with hands-on field experience. Detailed technical writing and the capability to communicate with stakeholders across multiple levels, from C-suite to operations personnel, is compulsory to the position. The willingness to perform field data collection, process and analyze data, perform calculations, and package the effort into a detailed technical report is essential. Working with ICO engineers in the field and the office to participate in the development of the team is an important part of this position. The expectation of the commissioning engineer includes developing and executing commissioning plans, conducting design and submittal reviews, developing pre-functional checklists and Functional Performance Test (FPT) scripts, witnessing start-up and TAB report verification, verifying controls programming and sequences of operations, managing the issues/deficiency log through resolution, and producing final commissioning reports. Familiarity with ASHRAE Guideline 0, Guideline 1.1, and Standard 202; LEED Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning requirements; and Massachusetts Stretch Code commissioning provisions is preferred. The Mechanical/Commissioning Engineer at ICO spends their week between office time, site work, and working from home. On average, engineers will spend 2-3 days/week on site. Engineers at ICO average 40 to 50 hours per week with some infrequent off-hours work required for testing or to meet deliverable commitments. ICO engineers work with various platforms and programs daily including Excel, Visio, Word, Google Workspace, etc. The Mechanical/Commissioning Engineer position is offered at a competitive annual salary with a comprehensive benefits package, inclusive of earned bonus, 100% company paid health coverage, paid vacation/holidays, and the opportunity to participate in our 401(k) with matching funds. The ideal candidate will possess:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, B.S. or equivalent experience.
- 5-10 years of experience in building commissioning, building systems, engineering design, and/or energy analysis.
- Strong understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and mass/energy-flow principles.
- Working knowledge of building mechanical, electrical, plumbing, energy and power systems and their integration.
- Understanding of building operations; experience in multiple aspects of building mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
- Experience with energy modeling, conducting energy studies, and developing financial performance metrics; strong Excel-based analysis skills.
- Experience executing new-construction commissioning, retro-commissioning, and/or monitoring-based commissioning, including FPT development and execution.
- Familiarity with ASHRAE Guideline 0, Guideline 1.1, and Standard 202; LEED Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning requirements; and Massachusetts Stretch Code commissioning provisions.
- Entrepreneurial mindset; willingness to support proposal development.
