Job Description
Our client, a leading company in the steel processing and fabrication industry, is seeking a Reliability Engineer to support and improve the performance, reliability, and long-term health of critical production equipment. This role is focused on optimizing maintenance and reliability programs, leading root cause analysis efforts, and partnering closely with operations and maintenance teams to improve uptime, quality, and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate is a hands-on, field-oriented mechanical engineer who thrives in an industrial manufacturing environment and enjoys solving complex equipment and reliability challenges directly on the production floor. Position Summary The Reliability Engineer will lead initiatives focused on preventive maintenance optimization, equipment reliability strategy, root cause analysis, and asset performance improvement. This individual will work cross-functionally with maintenance, operations, engineering, and fabrication teams to improve equipment uptime, production throughput, and overall operational reliability. This role combines reliability engineering, hands-on troubleshooting, and continuous improvement responsibilities within a heavy industrial steel processing and fabrication environment. Key Responsibilities Optimize preventive maintenance (PM) programs by improving task content, inspection methods, and maintenance frequencies Lead root cause analysis (RCA) efforts for significant equipment failures, recurring downtime events, and production issues Develop and maintain equipment criticality assessments and reliability improvement strategies Track and report reliability KPIs including MTBF, MTTR, downtime trends, and equipment performance metrics Support spare parts criticality analysis and long-term asset management planning Provide mechanical engineering support for fabrication and steel processing equipment including: Plate lasers Plasma tables Press brakes Decoiling and leveling lines Kinetic cutting systems Tube lasers Troubleshoot mechanical failures, wear issues, alignment problems, hydraulic and pneumatic system concerns, and material handling challenges Work directly on the production floor to inspect, diagnose, test, and improve machinery and mechanical systems Develop and implement equipment upgrades and reliability improvements to increase uptime, cut quality, throughput, and operator safety Partner with operations and maintenance teams to improve machine performance, production flow, and preventive maintenance effectiveness Support installation, commissioning, startup, and validation of new equipment Review and improve systems related to drives, bearings, rollers, conveyors, tooling, feed systems, structural machine components, hydraulics, and pneumatics Assist in resolving issues involving cut accuracy, feed consistency, material flatness, forming repeatability, and tube processing performance Develop maintenance procedures, inspection protocols, equipment standards, and technical documentation Coordinate with OEMs, contractors, and internal teams on repairs, upgrades, and continuous improvement projects Mentor technicians and junior engineering staff while promoting a practical, safety-focused culture Ensure compliance with safety standards, machine guarding requirements, and engineering best practices Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline preferred Experience in reliability engineering, maintenance engineering, or mechanical engineering within a manufacturing or industrial environment Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis experience with industrial equipment and mechanical systems Experience supporting fabrication, processing, or heavy manufacturing equipment preferred Knowledge of preventive maintenance strategies, reliability methodologies, and continuous improvement practices Familiarity with hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical drive, conveyor, and material handling systems Ability to analyze equipment performance data and reliability metrics Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills Hands-on mindset with the ability to work effectively in a production environment Work Environment & Physical Requirements Ability to work daily in industrial production and fabrication environments Comfortable working around active manufacturing equipment, moving machinery, heat, dust, sparks, and industrial noise Ability to climb stairs and ladders and access elevated or confined areas when necessary Ability to lift tools, components, and equipment parts as needed Must follow all PPE and safety requirements while working on the production floor Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is a practical and solutions-oriented engineer who enjoys working directly with equipment and production teams to solve real-world manufacturing challenges. This individual is comfortable being on the shop floor, identifying root causes, improving reliability programs, and driving measurable improvements in uptime, safety, quality, and operational performance.
