Job Summary The San Lorenzo Valley Water District is hiring an Assistant or Associate Engineer (depending on qualifications). This is a full-time, non-exempt position located on-site in Boulder Creek, CA, with local travel to external sites as needed. Under supervision of the Engineering Manager, the Assistant/Associate Engineer performs a variety of engineering assignments in support of the planning, design, construction, implementation, operation, and maintenance of the District's facilities and systems. They handle multiple projects with varying degrees of complexity under pressure of deadlines. Duties Conduct engineering studies Prepare and review reports, designs, and construction plans and specifications Provide engineering, hydro geologic, and scientific support in the design of the District's water supply Manage small engineering projects and/or manage specific phases (planning, design, or construction) of larger engineering projects Participate in the selection of consultants to identify and plan for improvements and new facilities, including administering and reviewing requests for quote / proposal (RFQ/RFP) Coordinate with the District's Environmental Division to ensure that measures identified through the CEQA process are adequately incorporated into plans, specifications, and permits Maintain detailed records on a variety of projects Interact tactfully and effectively with staff, contractors, developers, engineers, regulatory authorities, permitting agencies, the public, other government agencies, professional engineering consultants, other consultants, and representatives of other utilities Perform a variety of other tasks and duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated knowledge of: Civil engineering principles, practices, and methods including hydraulics and hydrology Contract administration, inspection, and management of public works project Mathematics and physics used in water distribution and treatment system design involving pipes, tanks, pump stations, wells, and water treatment facilities Permitting and environmental aspects of public works projects Software programs for word processing, spreadsheets, and time management Methods, equipment, and materials used in the construction, modification, and maintenance of water treatment, pumping, storage, distribution, and related facilities and equipment Methods and techniques used in design and construction planning, cost estimation, environmental review, installation, and inspection of water and wastewater collection, distribution, and treatment facilities Ability to: Read and interpret engineering drawings, construction specifications, engineering studies and reports Write routine reports, internal memoranda, letters and responses to contractor claims Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with employees, consultants, engineers, other agencies, contractors, and the public Provide clear verbal communications and make formal group / public presentations Solve day-to-day problems and properly respond to stressful situations Plan, organize, and schedule workload to maintain efficiency in assigned duties Use a variety of software applications and computer equipment necessary to complete duties for the position Analyze engineering and operational problems, evaluate alternatives and provide options and recommendations that demonstrate technical, administrative, and political considerations
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
Sufficient eyesight to read fine statistical reports and standard text and data on computer terminal screens Sit, stand, bend, and walk on level, uneven, and slippery terrain in an outdoor environment; climb ladders and steep slopes; and walk and crawl through pipelines while inspecting construction projects Manual dexterity and use of hands and fingers to grasp, handle or feel; perform repetitive hand movements; reach with hands and arms in the performance of daily duties; and to write legibly Ability to speak and hear at normal conversational levels in person, while performing field inspections/surveys, in the office, and over the telephone Occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and smell Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus Regularly required to wear employer-provided personal protective equipment. Must be capable of wearing respiratory equipment to include half, full-face, and supplied air systems Exposure to outdoors including adverse weather conditions (wet, heat, cold) Exposure to biohazards Exposure to high noise levels
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of the following education, training, and experience, which demonstrates attainment of the required knowledge and ability to perform the required work (with reasonable accommodation, if needed):
Education:
Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field, ideally with a curriculum that is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
Experience :
Two (2) years (Assistant Engineer) or three (3) years (Associate Engineer) of professional engineering experience in design and/or construction of infrastructure projects.
Substitution :
Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the education on a year-for-year basis.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS
- A valid California Class C Driver's License must be maintained at all times
- Project Management Certification is desired
Assistant Engineer:
Possession of a valid Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certificate and work towards obtaining Professional Engineer License are desired
Associate Engineer:
A valid state of California Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer
Associate Engineer:
Must obtain and continue to maintain a California Department of Public Health Grade D-2 Distribution Operator's Certificate within eighteen (18) months of employment in the position Please submit a cover letter and resume.
