Associate Water Resources Engineer Full-Time | Novato + Other Northern California locations | Hybrid and flexible scheduling options available
Compensation:
$120,000•$170,000 annually About the Firm Our client is a well-regarded boutique civil engineering consultancy focused exclusively on water-related infrastructure. Established nearly four decades ago, the firm has developed deep expertise across the full spectrum of wet infrastructure disciplines and serves public agencies and private clients throughout Northern California from several regional offices. The firm is known for its strong retention-many staff have been with the practice for over a decade-which speaks to a genuine commitment to reasonable workloads, professional development, and a 40-hour work culture that is the norm rather than the exception. The Opportunity We are seeking a licensed engineer with significant experience in water-related civil infrastructure to step into a senior technical and client-facing leadership role. This individual will direct the analysis and design of complex drainage, conveyance, flood mitigation, and utility system projects while mentoring junior staff and helping grow the firm's client portfolio. The breadth of the practice means exposure to a wide variety of project types rather than narrow specialization-an ideal fit for someone who thrives on technical diversity. Representative Practice Areas Urban drainage master planning and stormwater conveyance design Sanitary collection system evaluation, modeling, and rehabilitation Potable and non-potable water distribution system planning and analysis Riverine and coastal flood hazard assessment, mapping, and mitigation design Watershed-scale hydrologic analysis and environmental flow studies Stormwater quality compliance and green infrastructure planning Pump station and force main engineering Core Responsibilities Lead technical delivery on complex water infrastructure engagements, providing direction on analysis methodology, design approach, and quality assurance Serve as project manager on multiple concurrent assignments-defining scope, managing budgets and schedules, and ensuring client expectations are met or exceeded Cultivate and maintain client relationships, contribute to proposal development, and support business growth initiatives for the practice Mentor and guide a team of junior and mid-level engineers, fostering technical skill-building and professional advancement Coordinate with subconsultants, regulatory agencies, and multidisciplinary project stakeholders to keep engagements on track Provide expert technical review across the firm's project portfolio to uphold quality standards Ideal Candidate Profile Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline Active Professional Engineer (PE) registration in California, or ability to obtain promptly 8 to 15 years of progressive experience in water resources, drainage, or wet utility engineering Strong analytical capabilities and a track record of solving complex technical problems Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills Preferred Technical Experience Hands-on proficiency with industry-standard hydrologic and hydraulic simulation tools commonly used in stormwater, sewer, flood, and water distribution analysis Working knowledge of civil design and drafting platforms, geospatial analysis tools, and standard office productivity software Demonstrated experience managing client relationships, leading proposals, and developing new business Familiarity with federal, state, and local regulatory frameworks governing floodplain management, stormwater permitting, and water utility operations in California Compensation & Culture The firm offers a highly competitive total compensation package that includes base salary, profit-sharing, and comprehensive benefits covering medical, dental, and vision.
