Job Description

Summary of Basic Functions & Responsibilities Under the supervision and direction of the Tri Jr. Sr. High School Principal, the English Teacher is to develop students' skills and competence in the fields of English Language Arts, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The teacher fosters an appreciation for diverse literature, develops students' abilities to analyze complex texts, and equips them with the communication skills necessary for academic success and practical application in the modern world. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Applicants for the English Teacher position may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principal job elements. Teaches knowledge and skills in one or more fields of English Language Arts, including literature, composition, grammar, vocabulary, and speech, in accordance with district curriculum. Promotes critical and creative thinking, analytical reading, and effective written and oral expression in all related subject areas. Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials for subject area, and translates lesson plans into learning experiences to develop pertinent sequential assignments, challenge students, and best utilize the available time for instruction. Designs learning activities that demonstrate the application of English and communication skills to everyday existence, including research projects, writing workshops, socratic seminars, and multimedia presentations. Instructs students in the proper use of digital literacy tools, library resources, and research citations to ensure academic integrity. Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed. Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research. Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws. Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents. Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom. Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within grade level or department, and participates in faculty meetings and committees. Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids, and other supplies and equipment, maintains inventory records, and ensures materials are accessible and well-maintained. Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent. Qualifications Valid Indiana Teaching License or ability to obtain one.
