Job Description

Job Title:
Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Director Job Description The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Director leads and executes company-wide safety initiatives for a growing organization. This role is responsible for the strategic development, implementation, and oversight of all EHS programs, ensuring full compliance with OSHA and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The EHS Director builds strong relationships with field teams and senior leadership, drives a culture of safety, and influences change through data-driven decision-making and effective risk mitigation strategies. Responsibilities Develop, lead, and manage the organization's overall Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) program, ensuring consistent application across all operations. Partner with field supervision and leadership to implement, communicate, and enforce safety policies and procedures. Mentor, coach, and develop Safety Managers and support staff, including overseeing performance management and training initiatives. Design, implement, and track safety training programs across the organization to ensure regulatory compliance and continuous improvement. Conduct risk assessments, job hazard analyses, and site inspections to proactively identify, evaluate, and mitigate hazards. Investigate serious incidents and near-misses, identify root causes, and develop corrective actions and preventative measures. Review, enhance, and standardize EHS policies, programs, and procedures to reduce incidents and ensure ongoing regulatory compliance. Act as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, third-party administrators, legal counsel, and safety vendors. Provide guidance on workers' compensation programs, including claims management and return-to-work strategies. Establish and manage auditing processes to ensure compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements. Maintain accurate reporting, documentation, and metrics related to safety performance, compliance, and incident trends. Use data and analytics to inform decision-making, drive risk mitigation strategies, and support continuous improvement in safety performance. Promote and model a strong culture of safety, accountability, and inclusivity across all levels of the organization. Essential Skills 10+ years of progressive Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) leadership experience within construction, manufacturing, or similar industries. Proven experience managing safety programs at scale and leading safety teams across multiple locations or business units. Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and occupational safety and health principles. Expertise in safety program development, safety audits, and incident investigation. Experience with workers' compensation programs and claims management processes, including return-to-work strategies. Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and influence all levels of the organization. Ability to influence, coach, and drive cultural change related to safety and risk management. Strong problem-solving, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Self-starter mindset with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. High integrity, accountability, and professionalism. Positive, energetic attitude with a strong leadership presence. Commitment to excellence, continuous improvement, and fostering a safe and inclusive work environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Safety Management, Business, or a related field. CHST (Construction Health & Safety Technician) certification, or willingness to obtain. CSP (Certified Safety Professional) certification, or willingness to obtain. SMS (Safety Management Specialist) certification, or willingness to obtain. Experience working in construction, manufacturing, or similar industrial environments. Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with field teams and senior leadership. Experience partnering with regulatory agencies, third-party administrators, legal counsel, and safety vendors. Ability to design and deliver effective safety training programs for diverse audiences. Work Environment This role operates in both office and field environments, including regular visits to outdoor conditions and active construction or industrial sites. The EHS Director is comfortable working around dust, fumes, and various industrial materials while ensuring that appropriate safety measures are in place. The position requires the ability to lift up to 30 pounds and to perform physical activities such as walking, bending, and standing for extended periods. The role also involves navigating uneven terrain at job sites and moving between different work areas as needed to support safety initiatives and field operations. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Grimes, IA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $58.00 - $68.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
