Job Description

Working at Moffitt is both a career and a mission: to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer. As the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida, Moffitt employs some of the best and brightest minds from around the world. Join a dedicated team of nearly 10,000 who are shaping the future we envision. Moffitt has been recognized as a Best and Brightest Company to Work for in the Nation, a Digital Health Most Wired Organization and continually named one of the Tampa Bay Time's Top Workplaces. A National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center since 2001. Summary Environmental Health & Safety Coordinator — Moffitt Discovery and Innovation Research Center at SPEROS Pasco County, FL Moffitt is opening a new chapter at the Moffitt Discovery and Innovation Research Center (MDI) at SPEROS in Pasco County — a brand-new, state-of-the-art research campus built to advance the future of cancer science. We are seeking a hands-on Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) professional to join the Research EHS team as the plank-owning EHS Coordinator at this new site, working side-by-side with the on-site EHS Specialist to deliver day-to-day safety operations from day one. The position will initially be based at our Magnolia Campus. Ultimately, the position will be located at Moffitt at Speros in Land O'Lakes, FL once the facility opens mid-July 2026.
Position Highlights:
This is a ground-floor opportunity to be the founding EHS Coordinator at Moffitt's newest research campus.
The EHS Coordinator will:
Be the day-to-day operational safety presence at SPEROS — in the labs, on the loading dock, in the hazardous waste accumulation areas — keeping research moving safely. Work directly under and alongside the on-site EHS Specialist, with a clear runway to grow into program-level work over time. Provide hands-on support across every Research EHS Program element at SPEROS — inspections, hazardous waste, training, biosafety, chemical inventory, spill response readiness, and emergency preparedness. Help shape the daily safety routine in a brand-new building, with full backing from the established Research EHS team at the main campus, including the Hazardous Materials Manager, the Biosafety Officer, and the Research Safety Officer.
The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal EHS Coordinator for SPEROS is hands-on, organized, and energized by getting things done in person. They like being in the labs, like building good habits and good documentation, and like learning from senior safety staff.
They should have:
An Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific or safety field — biology, chemistry, environmental science, public health, occupational safety, or a closely related discipline. Some prior exposure to laboratory, research, or industrial safety — ideally in a research, university, hospital, or biotech setting. Comfort handling and moving hazardous materials and hazardous waste, including loading, transport, labeling, and documentation. Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and DOT requirements relevant to laboratory operations — or a clear track record of being able to learn regulatory frameworks quickly. Strong organizational habits — follow-through on inspection findings, corrective actions, training records, and inventory updates. Good communication skills with researchers, lab managers, and leadership; comfort being a visible safety presence in the building. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and willingness to learn safety-related software systems. Recognized safety-related certifications (e.g., DOT/IATA hazardous materials shipping, RBP, CHMM, OSHA 30) are a plus, but not required — development support is available.
Responsibilities:
Provide on-site, day-to-day operational EHS support at the Moffitt Discovery and Innovation Research Center at SPEROS, under the direction of the on-site EHS Specialist. Conduct and document Satellite Accumulation Area (SAA) inspections, biosafety annual inspections, and annual chemical inspections; track findings and follow up on corrective actions. Process hazardous waste at SPEROS — pickups, accumulation area checks, characterization assistance, packaging, labeling, and preparation for shipment — in coordination with the Hazardous Materials Manager and the EHS Specialist. Maintain chemical inventories, spill kit readiness, and other operational compliance touchpoints across SPEROS labs. Coordinate and assist in delivering safety training (RSMART, HWGRT, PPE) for SPEROS staff and students; track training records and follow up on overdue requirements. Support biosafety inspections and follow-up activities at the site. On-site EHS support is essential to ensure routine biosafety tasks are completed and deficiencies are tracked through to closure. Assist with documentation support for annual reviews of EHS policies, SOPs, the Biosafety Program, and the Laboratory Inspection Program. Help prepare SPEROS for Joint Commission surveys, DEP inspections, and Fire Marshal walkthroughs; support follow-up after each. Participate in the Research On-Call rotation (approximately 8 weeks per year as Primary On-Call). Participate in institutional preparation, response, and recovery for hurricane events and other disasters across an expanded research footprint.
Credentials and Qualifications:
An Associate's degree in relevant field is required. Bachelor's degree in relevant field is preferred. One to three years of hands-on experience in an EHS Department or a University setting is highly preferred. FL Driver's License in good standing is required and must be (and remain) insurable under the guidelines and requirements of the Center's insurance carrier. Working knowledge of OSHA regulations required or demonstrated ability to learn quickly.
DOT/IATA
hazardous materials shipping training (or willingness to obtain within the first year) required. Recognized safety-related certifications (RBP, CHMM, OSHA 30, etc.) preferred or in progress; development support is available. Must be able to lift and move hazardous waste containers and laboratory equipment, and tolerate periods of standing, walking, and PPE use during inspection and waste-handling activities. Moffitt Team Members are eligible for Medical, Dental, Vision, Paid Time Off, Retirement, Parental Leave and more. Tampa is a thriving metropolitan city, which has become a hub for ground-breaking research, welcoming individuals from around the globe. This diverse city is engulfed with rich culture, year-round activities, amazing cuisine and so much more. We strive for work/life balance. If you have the vision, passion, and dedication to contribute to our mission, then we have a place for you
