ROOTS SOCIETY EQUINE HORSE CARETAKER
- PART-TIME (NON-EXEMPT)
- $25.
HOUR Summary:
Responsible for ensuring and providing the daily health, safety, and well-being of horses ethically by managing feeding, grooming, stall cleaning, and turnout routines, working in a therapeutic, educational, or rehabilitative settings to support facilitation of interactions between horses and humans. Responsible for ensuring the safety and welfare of both the equine horses and participants, interpreting equine behavior, and collaborating with the therapy team, meeting the goals and objectives supporting the team and participants.Position Description:
The Equine Horse Caretaker position key responsibilities include monitoring horse health, administering basic medical treatments, cleaning stalls and maintaining barn safety/cleanliness, often requiring high physical stamina and the ability to work in varied outdoor weather conditions. Supporting the Equine Therapy Team on collaborating and creating the continued sustainability.Roles & Responsibilities:
Daily Care & Hygiene; Feed, water, groom, and clean stables/stalls daily; Health Monitoring; Check legs for heat/soreness, monitor for injury or illness, and manage turnout; Medical Assistance; Administer medication, apply bandages, and assist with veterinary or farrier visits; Facility Maintenance; Clean and maintain barn, equipment, and pastures, ensure clean water access; Facilitate safe and intentional movement and activity for the horses, encouraging engagement while prioritizing their physical and emotional safety with consideration of pre-existing conditions if any; Maintaining and caring for shared spaces by maintaining clean, organized, and welcoming environments that reflect respect for the animals and land; Monitor and restock supplies (feed, grooming, tools, health items), ensuring the space is prepared and responsive to on-going needs; Respond to health concerns with urgency and care, coordinating with veterinary support when needed and ensuring timely, follow-up; Communicate regularly with team members and leadership, sharing updates on horse well-being and any emerging needs or concerns; Support on-boarding and mentorship of staff by modeling care practices, safety and accountability rooted in Tewa Roots Society values; Coordinate seasonal care (health checks, vaccinations, transitions), minimizing stress for the horses and supporting long-term wellness; Managing a records management system of daily checklist for the horses, including the vet visits, continued care, etc. Consistent communication with the team, leadership and vets; Assist and support the Equine Therapist; Assist and support the experience of a family-centered environment;Qualifications:
Equine Experience; Previous experience handling horses and understanding horse behavior; Physical Fitness; Ability to lift 25-100 pounds, bending and lifting; Reliability; Dependability is crucial for consistent animal care, often including weekend and evening hours; Experience practicing in a culturally and linguistically diverse setting is desired; Assisting in demonstrated understanding and acceptance of working as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and familiarity with the wraparound approach to comprehensive community based-care; Supporting the experience in collaborating with family members, youth and community cultural stakeholders through active involvement with the community; Excellent oral and written communication skills;Additional Qualifications:
Language Skills- Tewa Speaking appreciated or ability to work effectively in a multi-lingual environment with translator support; Computer Skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Software including; Windows, Word, and Excel; Physical Demands
- The work requires driving and involves standing, bending, walking and driving a car in all types of road conditions; Lifting and carrying is necessary to set up equipment for equine services, special events, clinics, and teaching programs; Works in an outside Equine setting with horses, which may involve lifting and moving objects;
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of customs of the Pueblo Community, and appreciation for the importance of traditional ways of lifestyle and language; Ability to apply multicultural sensitivity and awareness of working in Tribal Communities; Willingness and ability to treat staff, and patients with respect, empathy and dignity; Possess exceptional listening and communication skills; Possess a working understanding of HIPAA regulations, requirements, and guidelines and willingness to exercise a strict level of patient confidentiality;Required Licenses/Certifications:
Valid New Mexico driver's license; Insurable by a carrierBackground Investigation Clearance Working Conditions:
Outdoor- The Equine Therapy Program
- Horse Caretaker requires interaction with horses and working in outdoor elements and temperatures; The work sometimes requires driving and involves standing, bending, and walking; Lifting and carrying is sometimes necessary to set up equipment in preparation for sessions/trainings; The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by a staff member to successfully perform the essential functions of this role; Exposure to outside weather in all seasons is necessary; Travel is often on unimproved roads; Exposure to infections and communicable disease is possible.
