The Equipment Operator series performs skilled and semi-skilled work operating light to heavy equipment in the maintenance, construction, and repair of Town infrastructure, including streets, open spaces, and storm drainage systems. Employees are responsible for safe equipment operation, general labor, and maintenance tasks. Responsibilities expand in skill, independence, and leadership through the I-III levels.ESSENTIAL DUTIES ANDRESPONSIBILITIES
The following statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the job and do not include other nonessential or peripheral duties that may be required. The Town of Milliken retains the right to modify or change the duties or essential and additional functions of the job at any time.- Operate a variety of light to heavy equipment such as single and tandem axle trucks, anti-icing trucks, air compressors, skid steers, loaders, graders, sealers, backhoes, tractors, snowplows, and mowers.
- Perform semi-skilled work in maintenance and repair of Town parks, streets, right-of-ways, and open spaces.
- Load, haul, and unload materials such as dirt, gravel, and debris.
- Perform snow and ice removal; operate sanding and anti-icing equipment.
- Maintain and inspect assigned vehicles and equipment; report and perform minor repairs.
- Maintain daily work logs, activity reports, and equipment maintenance records.
- Respond to citizen inquiries courteously and professionally.
- Work safely and comply with all applicable safety standards, traffic laws, and Town procedures.
- May supervise seasonal employees.
- Perform other duties as assigned. Additional Duties by Level Equipment Operator II
- Operate more complex equipment (e.g., graders, backhoes, and large loaders) independently.
- May supervise or assist with training and direction of seasonal or entry-level employees.
- Perform more technical maintenance, including storm drainage systems, asphalt patching, and concrete finishing.
- Serve as crew lead on smaller projects.
- Participate in snow and ice control planning and supervision of assigned routes.
- May assist with utility system repairs. Equipment Operator III
- Serve as lead equipment operator supporting the Foreman in oversight of work crews on major public works or parks projects.
- Operate a full range of heavy equipment with advanced skill and precision.
- Plan and coordinate project logistics, materials, and safety compliance.
- Provide input on scheduling, project planning, and employee performance.
- Perform advanced equipment diagnostics and minor mechanical repairs.
- Train and mentor Equipment Operator I and II staff.
- May serve in a supervisory or on-call capacity during emergencies, including snow operations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Equipment Operator I- Knowledge of basic construction, maintenance, and repair methods.
- Skill in operating light equipment and tools safely and efficiently.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Basic recordkeeping and reporting abilities.
- Awareness of safe working practices, including traffic control and personal protective equipment (PPE) use. Equipment Operator II
- Working knowledge of construction and maintenance methods for streets, parks, and open spaces.
- Proficient in operating various heavy equipment safely and effectively.
- Knowledge of basic mechanical systems and preventive maintenance procedures.
- Ability to train and direct less experienced staff.
- Ability to interpret work orders, blueprints, or project plans.
- Strong understanding of traffic laws and construction safety regulations. Equipment Operator III
- Advanced knowledge of heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
- Expertise in construction techniques, grading, concrete and asphalt work, and site preparation.
- Leadership and supervisory skills to direct work crews effectively.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to plan, coordinate, and inspect work for quality and safety compliance.
- Proficient in advanced recordkeeping, scheduling, and reporting.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Equipment Operator I- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of six (6) months of experience in construction, maintenance, or related field.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a Class B Colorado CDL within six months of employment.
- Ability to obtain C-DOT Traffic Control Safety Certification within one year of employment. Equipment Operator II
- High school diploma or GED required; technical training in equipment operation preferred.
- 2-4 years of experience in construction or public works operations, including heavy equipment use.
- Possession of a Class B Colorado CDL required.
- C-DOT Traffic Control Safety Certification required.
- Demonstrated ability to operate multiple types of heavy equipment. Equipment Operator III
- High school diploma or GED required; associate's degree or vocational training preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in heavy equipment operation and public works or parks maintenance.
- Possession of a Class A Colorado CDL preferred.
- C-DOT Traffic Control Safety Certification required.
- Demonstrated supervisory or crew lead experience.
MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT USED
Equipment used includes a variety of light to heavy equipment such as single/tandem axle trucks, jet/vactor trucks, anti-icing trucks, patch trucks, air compressors, skid steers, loaders, graders, sealers, backhoes, tractors, chippers, snowplows, street sweepers, mowers. Light power driven vehicles such as pickup trucks, vans, autos and power and hand tools including but not limited to; drills, trowels, floats, rakes, shovels, and brooms.WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed outdoors year-round, with frequent exposure to heat, cold, dust, and wet weather. The position involves heavy physical labor, frequent lifting of 50 lbs. or more, and operation of machinery and vehicles in varying conditions. Requires standing, bending, and climbing for extended periods and adherence to safety procedures at all times. Overtime or irregular hours may be required for snow removal or emergency response.
