Full-time Equipment Operator Maintenance Technician I Job Functions:
The Highway Department (HD) Equipment Operator Maintenance Technician I is responsible for a wide range of general labor work associated with maintaining town roads and associated storm water systems, building and grounds, and all other duties as assigned. The Equipment Operator Maintenance Technician I will be operating a variety of specialized trucks and highway equipment such as a bucket loader, grader, plows and seven-yard dump trucks involving plowing, salting, and sanding in winter, and general highway maintenance and construction work in other seasons, and all special projects as assigned. The Equipment Operator Maintenance Technician I is an entry level position within the HD.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Operates trucks with air brakes and in excess of four tons and other equipment of moderate complexity for HD projects. 2. Ability to operate loader and/or backhoe for basic needs including but not limited to loading of seven yard trucks for salting, sanding, and snow removal. 3. Maintain town roads and parking lots in winter: Plow; remove snow with trucks and plow equipment; salt and sand. 4. Maintain town roads and parking lots in summer: Grading of gravel roads; repair of potholes; hauling gravel and/or stone, etc. 5. Perform a full range of basic road maintenance construction work.For example:
asphalt and concrete work, stormwater related repairs and maintenance, excavation for infrastructure repair, street markings, sign installation, etc. 6. Perform a variety of general manual labor work, including shoveling, mowing and brush cutting, painting and general building maintenance and repairs, infrastructure repair and maintenance, collection and disposal of refuse, and the like. 7. Perform equipment maintenance. For example, maintaining and repairing a variety of equipment and vehicles used by the HD (perform regular inspections and maintenance; troubleshoot problems; plan and perform necessary repairs and/or recommend outside assistance as needed; mount and remove snowplow equipment, sanders, tires, etc.). 8. Performs duties in accordance with established procedures and techniques, requiring independent judgment and equipment operation. 9. Ensures time and work is accounted for through appropriate documentation of work and hours. 10. Assists in emergency highway and infrastructure repairs as required. 11. Makes frequent contact with Road Commissioner, Select Board, and the public. 12. Supports coordination of activities between all HD staff and other departments and performs other tasks or functions as necessary to accomplish town and HD goals and objectives. 13. Successful completion of all required safety and training courses and annual refresher courses as directed by the State and/or Town. 14. Performing other tasks or functions as assigned by the Town Administrator, Highway Commissioner, or Select Board.Knowledge and Experience:
1. High school graduation or equivalent, one to three years of relevant experience as a truck driver in general construction or public works related activities, or equivalent combinations of education, activities and experience as approved by the HD. 2. Holding a valid commercial driver's license CDL Class B is preferred. 3. Good technical knowledge and skills related to the operation of a variety of highway maintenance and construction equipment. 4. Ability to work independently and be a self-starter. 5. Demonstrated ability to operate power tools and equipment. 6. Demonstrated ability to follow standard safety practices and town policies and procedures. 7. Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally, in writing, and with basic computer skills. 8. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and carry out oral directions. 9. Demonstrated physical ability to operate highway equipment and perform manual labor under varying weather conditions and other job duties. 10. Must portray a professional, customer first/customer friendly attitude of the town to the public. Must maintain a positive, can-do attitude and establish positive working relationships with peers, staff, consultants, contractors and supervisors. Must be self-motivated and have the proven ability to accomplish goals and work individually or in a team environment. 1. Internal work may include occasional work performed in climate-controlled office environments, where exposure to conditions of extreme heat/cold, poor ventilation, fumes and gases is very limited. Noise level is moderate but may be amplified in certain conditions. 2. External work requires exposure to varying weather conditions while performing work on highways or other town locations. 3. Expected to work evenings, weekends, and holidays during call-in situations; during snowstorms, snow removal and other situations when called on to do so.Disclaimer:
