Job Summary:
The Director of Exceptional Student Education (ESE) provides strategic leadership, direction, and oversight for allPK-12 ESE
programs and services within the school system. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while promoting high-quality instructional practices and equitable access to education for students with disabilities. The Director collaborates closely with school leaders and staff to support student achievement and continuous program improvement, as a 12 month position. The ESE Director works with the Florida Department of Education Bureau of Special Education to ensure compliance with federal and state requirements as related to the Local Education Agency and reports to the Director of Student Services.Responsibilities:
Develop, implement, and evaluate district-wide ESE compliance and services for students in grades PK-12. Ensure alignment of ESE initiatives with systems goals, state standards, and federal requirements (e.g., IDEA). Monitor program effectiveness through data analysis and implement improvements as needed. Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, policies, and procedures related to Exceptional Student Education. Oversee the development, implementation, and monitoring of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Coordinate internal audits and respond to state monitoring activities and corrective action plans. Collaborate with principals on the supervision, evaluation, and support of school-based ESE Compliance Specialists. Provide guidance and technical assistance to school administrators and instructional staff regarding ESE policies, procedures, and best practices. Work cross-functionally with curriculum, assessment, and student services teams to ensure integrated support for students. Directly supervise specialized instructional and support staff, including but not limited to: Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Teachers Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVI) School Psychologists Testing Diagnostician Support recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluation of ESE personnel. Facilitate ongoing professional development aligned with district and program needs. Serve as a liaison between the district, families, and community agencies regarding ESE services. Promote family engagement and ensure effective communication regarding student services and rights. Monitor and report on ESE state indicators as related to LEA status and requirements. Assist with professional development on ESE compliance. Collaborate and participate with the school system's Education Leadership Team Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors. (or equivalent) Master's degree or higher in Exceptional Student Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field. Valid Florida certification in Exceptional Student Education. Educational Leadership or Administration certification preferred.Minimum Experience:
Minimum of five (3) years of successful experience in ESE, including leadership or administrative experience. Demonstrated experience with IDEA compliance, IEP development, and program oversight.
