Aug 31, 2026 Job Description An ESP supports certified teachers by providing instructional, behavioral, and personal care to students. ESPs work in classrooms to implement lesson plans, manage behavior, assist with clerical tasks, and supervise students in, and out, of the classroom.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Support:
Working with individuals or small groups to reinforce lessons, read, and develop skills.
Behavior Management:
Assisting with classroom management, implementing behavior plans, and ensuring a safe, orderly, and productive learning environment.
Special Education Support:
Implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or 504 plans, providing one-on-one assistance, and supporting students with physical or learning challenges.
Clerical Tasks:
Grading assignments, tracking student attendance, and preparing educational materials.
Supervision:
Monitoring students during lunch, recess, bus arrival/dismissal, and in hallways.
Communication:
Reporting student progress to teachers and sometimes assisting in communication with parents.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent is typically required; some positions require an associate's degree or passing a paraprofessional competency exam.
Experience:
Experience working with children, especially those with special needs, is often preferred.
Skills:
Patience, adaptability, strong communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively.
