Job Description

Summary:
The Facilities Specialist performs and coordinates facilities maintenance activities at the Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC). This hands-on, technical position is responsible for preventative maintenance, corrective repairs, trouble-call response, and coordination of contracted services to support safe, reliable, and efficient facility operations. The role works closely with the Life Support Systems / Operations (LSS/Ops) team to ensure maintenance activities are aligned with animal care, guest experience, and building performance requirements.
Education/Training Requirements:
Associate's degree, technical certification, or equivalent training in facilities maintenance, HVAC, mechanical systems, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience in facilities maintenance, building operations, or mechanical maintenance. Experience working independently, responding to trouble calls, and coordinating contracted services required. Valid driver's license required.
Essential Duties:
Preventative & Corrective Maintenance:
Perform and manage building preventative maintenance and corrective repairs using the CMMS; maintain accurate records, inspections, and service documentation.
Trouble Call Response:
Respond to facilities trouble calls; diagnose issues; complete repairs; and communicate status and operational impacts to affected departments.
Building Systems & Equipment:
Operate, maintain, and perform repairs on HVAC equipment, motors, pumps, heating plant equipment, building systems, and facility vehicles.
Contractor Coordination:
Coordinate and oversee contracted services including fire alarm and suppression systems, elevators, and specialized maintenance activities.
Operational Coordination & Safety:
Coordinate maintenance activities with LSS/Ops; direct assigned staff or contractors during work activities; comply with and support safety programs including lockout/tagout, hot work, confined space, and general workplace safety; assist with grounds maintenance, snow and ice control, and participate in 24-hour on-call rotation as required. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, goodwill, cooperation, and providing high standards of service. Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical equipment), boiler plant operations, fire/life safety systems, elevator service coordination, preventative maintenance practices, and CMMS use. Ability to plan, perform, and document maintenance work safely and efficiently; direct assigned workers and contractors without formal supervisory authority; communicate effectively with technical and non-technical staff; use basic computer tools, Microsoft Office, and Google Workplace applications; comply with safety programs and applicable regulations; and work effectively in a mission-critical, public-facing facility.

The position requires standing, walking, climbing, working from heights, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Exposure to coastal weather conditions, noise, moving mechanical equipment, and variable temperatures is expected.
