Job Description
Southern Transport is seeking a Field Safety Officer to support safe, compliant operations across active job sites in the heavy haul, crane, and specialized transportation environment. This role serves as the boots-on-the-ground safety presence for field operations, helping crews identify hazards, reinforce safe work practices, and respond quickly to incidents or unsafe conditions. The ideal candidate brings a strong safety mindset, confidence working around heavy equipment and active job sites, and the ability to build credibility with field personnel through consistency, professionalism, and real-time coaching. The Field Safety Officer plays a critical role in protecting employees, customers, equipment, and the public while supporting the efficient execution of field operations. This position helps ensure crews go home safely every day by proactively identifying risks, reinforcing compliance, and serving as a trusted resource in the field. What You'll Do On-Site Safety Monitoring Conduct daily safety observations at active crane, transport, and job sites Ensure crews follow company safety procedures and regulatory requirements Address unsafe behaviors or conditions in real time Promote hazard awareness and safe work practices in the field Serve as a visible safety resource for operations personnel Incident Response & Investigation Respond to incidents, near-misses, injuries, and safety concerns in the field Assist with initial incident documentation and evidence gathering Support root cause analysis and corrective action implementation Communicate incident details and findings to District Safety Managers and leadership Participate in follow-up reviews and continuous improvement efforts Reporting & Documentation Prepare and submit daily safety activity reports and site observations Maintain accurate records of inspections, incidents, corrective actions, and communications Support compliance tracking and audit readiness efforts Assist with maintaining field-level safety documentation and reporting accuracy Collaboration & Training Partner with operations leadership and field supervisors Reinforce safety expectations and compliance standards Support field-level coaching, training, and safety meetings Provide field feedback to leadership to improve safety performance What You Need to Succeed Education High school diploma or GED required Associate or bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Safety Management, or related field preferred Technical or vocational training in industrial safety, construction, or transportation operations is a plus Experience 2+ years of experience in safety, field operations, or heavy equipment environments Experience in crane operations, rigging, heavy haul transport, construction, or industrial operations preferred Experience conducting safety observations, audits, or inspections Familiarity with OSHA standards and industrial safety practices Certifications OSHA 10-Hour Construction or General Industry certification First Aid/CPR certification required or ability to obtain quickly CHST certification is a plus Crane, rigging, or heavy equipment safety certifications are a plus Skills & Attributes Strong communication and documentation skills Confident providing real-time coaching and feedback Strong hazard recognition and situational awareness Dependable, adaptable, and team-oriented with a safety-first mindset A Day in the Life No two days are exactly the same. One morning may involve observing crane operations at a customer site, while the afternoon could include investigating a near miss, conducting a safety walkthrough, or coaching crews on proper procedures during a heavy haul load securement. You'll spend significant time in the field supporting operations, documenting observations, collaborating with supervisors, and helping drive continuous improvement across Southern's safety culture.
