Job Title:
Joint Use Field Technician Job Description The Joint Use Field Technician supports utility and telecommunications projects by performing field inspections, safety audits, and detailed data collection on overhead distribution infrastructure. This role focuses on assessing utility poles and communication attachments to ensure compliance with joint use standards, engineering requirements, and safety regulations. The technician provides accurate field data, identifies safety concerns, and supports engineering teams with information used for make-ready design, infrastructure upgrades, broadband expansion, and joint use compliance initiatives. Responsibilities Perform field inspections of utility poles and overhead distribution systems for joint use projects. Collect detailed data on pole height, class, and condition to support engineering analysis. Document communication and electric attachments on utility poles, including their placement and condition. Inspect and record details related to guying, anchors, and associated hardware. Measure and document clearance distances to verify compliance with utility and safety standards. Capture clear and accurate photos of field conditions for engineering and compliance review. Record comprehensive field notes that describe existing conditions, safety issues, and any anomalies observed. Collect GPS-based location data to support mapping, GIS analysis, and project documentation. Verify existing field conditions against utility standards, engineering design requirements, and joint use guidelines. Conduct safety audits and inspections of utility poles and telecommunications attachments to identify potential hazards. Document safety hazards and prepare recommended corrective actions for review by engineering and operations teams. Prepare and submit inspection reports that summarize findings, data collected, and safety observations. Support engineering teams by providing accurate and timely field information used in make-ready design and infrastructure upgrades. Use GIS tools, including QGIS, to support field data collection, mapping, and analysis as needed. Travel to multiple field sites, including overnight stays, to complete inspections and audits across the assigned region. Essential Skills At least 1 year of experience working in the field as a utility service technician or in a similar role involving utility infrastructure. Hands-on experience conducting safety audits and inspections of utility poles and telecommunications attachments. Proven ability to collect detailed field data, including measurements, photos, and field notes, for utility poles and overhead distribution systems. Experience documenting safety hazards and developing recommended corrective actions. Familiarity with joint use, pole loading, safety audits, and inspection practices related to overhead distribution infrastructure. Experience preparing and completing inspection reports for engineering or compliance purposes. Ability and willingness to travel, including overnight trips, to various field sites. Basic proficiency with GIS tools, including prior experience as a GIS analyst or technician. Ability to use QGIS for mapping, data visualization, or analysis related to field data. Strong attention to detail and accuracy when collecting, recording, and verifying field information. Capability to work independently in the field while following established safety and engineering standards. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience collecting GPS-based data, photos, and detailed field notes for utility poles and overhead infrastructure. Experience verifying field conditions against utility standards, engineering design requirements, or joint use guidelines. Exposure to GIS platforms such as ArcGIS in addition to QGIS. Previously in utility, telecommunications, or broadband expansion projects involving overhead distribution systems. Strong written communication skills for preparing clear inspection reports and safety documentation. Comfort working with digital tools and applications used for field data collection and reporting. Work Environment This role is field-based and involves frequent travel across sites within Georgia, including regular overnight travel to complete inspections and audits. The technician works primarily outdoors around utility poles and overhead distribution systems, often in varying weather conditions and terrain. The position requires the use of GPS devices, cameras, and mobile or tablet-based tools for capturing photos, field notes, and location data. GIS software, including QGIS and potentially other platforms such as ArcGIS, supports mapping and analysis of collected field information. The work environment emphasizes safety, adherence to utility standards, and collaboration with engineering teams to support broadband expansion, utility programs, and joint use compliance.Ex Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Villa Rica, GA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $24.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
