Job Description
Job Summary The Senior Fixed Asset Accountant supports Tuskegee University's financial integrity through comprehensive management of capital assets and related accounting functions. This position oversees the lifecycle of fixed assets, including acquisition, capitalization, depreciation, CIP tracking, and disposals. The role ensures compliance with GAAP, GASB, University policy, and audit standards, while collaborating with Facilities, Procurement, IT, and the Budget Office. Essential Job Duties Maintain and reconcile the fixed asset subledger and general ledger accounts. Review asset-related expenditures for proper capital/expense classification. Ensure timely capitalization of assets and oversee depreciation schedules. Prepare monthly asset roll-forward reports and year-end close deliverables. Track CIP expenditures and coordinate CIP-to-asset transfers. Monitor budget-to-actual project costs and collaborate on project closeouts. Prepare audit schedules and required documentation for external auditors. Maintain strong internal controls related to asset management. Ensure compliance with GAAP, GASB, and University policies. Produce financial schedules, reconciliations, and management dashboards. Analyze depreciation impacts and asset trends for decision-making. Provide guidance to junior accounting staff. Serve as a liaison to Grants Accounting, Facilities, Procurement, and Budget. Qualifications (Education, Experience and Specialized Training) Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field required. 7 years of progressive accounting experience, including significant responsibility for fixed assets and/or capital project accounting. Physical Demands Office-based with occasional evening or weekend work for fiscal reporting deadlines or major university events. May require light travel for conferences, training, or university business. Ability to operate standard office equipment. Ability to walk short distances. Ability to lift and carry parcels, packages, and other items. Ability to view a computer terminal. Skills and Attributes Knowledge of Microsoft 365 package, ERP systems, ASC 842 leases (FASB standard), GAAP, Depreciation, etc. Analytical and critical thinking skills. Reconcile asset accounts using advanced Excel skills.
