SUMMARY:
The Staff Accountant is responsible for maintaining financial records, ensuring accuracy in financial reporting, and supporting the accounting team with daily operations. This role involves recording transactions, reconciling accounts, and assisting with month-end and year-end closing processes. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and capable of working independently while collaborating with various departments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliation across multiple bank accounts including zero balance accounts (ZBA), ensuring accuracy and no discrepancies.
  • Prepare journal entries as needed (prepaids, accruals, notes, straight-line rent, management fees, interest, bad debt, capital call/distribution).
  • Work with the Senior Accountant to record transactions involving real estate acquisitions/disposals/entity changes/lot line adjustments, understand the overall goal to determine how to setup and book journal entries that are in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and properly reflect business needs
  • Prepare monthly workpapers and reconcile general ledger accounts to subsidiary ledgers.
  • Assist with preparation of consolidated financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow) in accordance with GAAP for multiple entities.
  • Support the audit process by gathering and reviewing supporting documentation, addressing inquiries, and collaborating with the external audit team to ensure a smooth and efficient audit.
Assist with other tasks as needed.
Other duties as assigned:
  • Cross training and documentation. Participate in continuing education opportunities.
  • Create or update documentation for accounting processes and procedures.
  • Research accounting regulations as needed to ensure transactions recorded are in compliance with
GAAP. CORE COMPETENCIES
  • Detail oriented: Ensure completeness and accuracy when recording transactions and reviewing work performed by others (A/R, A/P).

Work closely with various teams to understand business transactions and apply accounting expertise for accurate and timely recording.

    Manage assigned companies or focus areas autonomously, ensuring deadlines are met.
      Time Management:
      Prioritize tasks effectively to meet tight month-end and quarter-end deadlines.
      • Analytical & problem solving: Apply strong accounting knowledge to handle both routine and complex transactions, considering company structure and different accounting frameworks (accrual, cash, tax, fair market).
      QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS
      • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university, CPA preferred.
      • 1-2 years public accounting experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
      • Advanced Excel knowledge and or knowledge of Yardi and Spectrum preferred.
      • Understanding of Real Estate, business entities and different books (cash, accrual, etc.).
      • Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
