This position performs complex accounting work requiring the application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), nonprofit accounting standards, and sound financial controls. Primary responsibilities include month-end and year-end close activities, account reconciliations, financial statement preparation, grant and donor-restricted fund accounting, audit support, financial analysis, and process improvement initiatives. The Senior Accountant serves as a technical accounting resource and works closely with the CFO and program leadership to support informed financial decision-making and organizational sustainability. This position operates with professional judgment and accountability and reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer. Requirements Essential Duties and Responsibilities Accounting Functions o Perform timely and accurate month-end and year-end closing activities, including preparation and review of journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations. o Maintain the integrity and accuracy of the general ledger and supporting schedules. o Prepare monthly financial statements, including operating statements, balance sheets, trial balances, and other financial reports as requested. o Reconcile balance sheet accounts and review key revenue and expense accounts to ensure transactions are complete, accurate, and properly documented. o Research and resolve accounting discrepancies and identify opportunities for process improvements and enhanced internal controls. o Apply GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards to complex accounting transactions and financial reporting activities. o Record, monitor, and reconcile donor-restricted and grant-funded accounts in accordance with donor requirements, grant agreements, and audit standards. o Assist with maintaining accounting policies, procedures, and documentation to ensure consistency and compliance. o Maintain organized electronic and hard-copy accounting records and supporting documentation. o Support implementation, maintenance, and enhancement of accounting systems and financial reporting tools. Audit, Compliance, and Internal Controls o Prepare audit schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for annual financial statement audits. o Coordinate with external auditors and respond to audit requests in a timely and professional manner. o Support compliance with federal, state, local, grant, and nonprofit reporting requirements. o Evaluate accounting processes and internal controls and recommend improvements to strengthen financial stewardship and operational efficiency. o Assist with preparation of regulatory filings and financial reporting requirements as assigned. Financial Analysis and Reporting o Conduct financial analyses to monitor organizational and program performance against budget. o Analyze revenue, expenses, labor utilization, and program sustainability metrics. o Support preparation of annual operating budgets and periodic financial forecasts. o Assist the CFO in preparing monthly financial presentations, including budget variance analyses and key financial indicators. o Monitor and track restricted funds by funding source, program, and restriction category. o Perform monthly and year-to-date reconciliations of restricted fund activity, including receipts, releases, and balances. o Create and improve financial reporting tools that enhance reconciliation processes and support program performance monitoring. o Collect, analyze, and report financial data to support internal management reporting and funder requirements. o Assist with special projects, including: o Annual budget development o Key performance indicator (KPI) tracking o Financial trend analysis o Operational and program sustainability analysis o Cash flow analysis o Ad hoc reporting and special projects as assigned Collaboration and Organizational Support o Serve as a financial resource to program directors, managers, and administrative staff. o Respond to inquiries regarding financial reporting, budgets, grant expenditures, and accounting procedures. o Collaborate across departments to improve financial processes and ensure accurate financial information. o Maintain standards of confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical conduct. o Attend semi-monthly PR/HR meetings and other organizational meetings as assigned. o Perform other related duties as required to support organizational needs. Required Skills/Abilities o Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including financial analysis, pivot tables, formulas, and reporting tools. o Experience with accounting software systems; Sage experience preferred. o Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). o Knowledge of nonprofit accounting, restricted fund accounting, grant accounting, and government reporting requirements. o Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills. o Ability to independently manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. o Experience developing and improving accounting processes and internal controls. o Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with staff at all organizational levels. o Demonstrated commitment to service, equity, compassion, and ARCC's mission and values. o Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain strict confidentiality.
Education and Experience:
o Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a closely related field required. o Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible accounting experience. o Experience with month-end close, financial reporting, account reconciliations, audit preparation, and financial analysis required. o Nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred. o Experience with grant-funded organizations and donor-restricted funds preferred. The mission of Alum Rock Counseling Center (ARCC) is to heal families and inspire youth to reach their full potential. For over 50 years, ARCC has provided a wide range of behavioral health counseling and school-based support, designed to promote health equity & educational equity, and ensure that high-risk youth stay safe, in school, and drug & violence free. The agency supports a predominantly Latinx (70%) population in underserved schools and neighborhoods throughout Santa Clara County with a focus on the high-need area of East and Central San Jose. ARCC staff provide services to youth and caregivers who otherwise might struggle to afford and/or access quality care. In 2020-21, the agency served 6,000+ individuals, through 13 different programs, including individual and family counseling, substance use prevention education, youth mentoring, family reunification, parent training/support, and services in 40+ high-need schools. We have 85 full-time employees and dedicated volunteers that make our program run.
