Job Description
Description We are looking for an experienced Sr. Accountant to support a dynamic organization in Washington, District of Columbia through a short-term contract opportunity. This position will oversee essential accounting operations, maintain accurate financial records, and collaborate across teams to ensure timely reporting and compliance. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a hands-on environment, supporting core accounting responsibilities while also contributing wherever needed across the business.
Responsibilities:
- Manage general ledger activity and maintain the accuracy of daily financial transactions.
- Prepare and post journal entries, ensuring proper support and alignment with accounting standards.
- Perform monthly balance sheet and bank reconciliations to identify and resolve discrepancies promptly.
- Lead key month-end close activities to support complete and timely financial reporting.
- Reconcile financial information between donor-related records and the accounting system to ensure consistency and accuracy.
- Work closely with payroll stakeholders to coordinate payroll accounting and related financial entries.
- Partner with the grants function to support invoicing, financial reporting, and grant-related accounting needs.
- Contribute across departments as needed in a small-team setting, providing accounting support for evolving operational priorities. Requirements
- Proven experience in a senior-level accounting role with strong ownership of month-end close processes.
- Solid knowledge of general ledger management, journal entries, and account reconciliation.
- Hands-on experience completing balance sheet and bank reconciliations with a high level of accuracy.
- Familiarity with grant accounting, including support for invoicing and financial reporting activities.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with cross-functional teams such as payroll and grants.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to investigate variances and resolve accounting discrepancies.
- Willingness to work in a collaborative, fast-moving environment where responsibilities may extend across multiple functions.
