- Full-time Position Summary The Construction Job Cost Accountant is responsible for the accurate tracking, analysis, and reporting of project costs across multiple operating, divisions, and job sites.
This role partners closely with operations, project managers, accounting, and executive leadership to ensure timely and reliable financial information that supports operational decision-making and profitability management. The ideal candidate possesses strong construction accounting knowledge, understands job costing principles, and thrives in a fast-paced, decentralized operating environment. Key Responsibilities Job Cost Management Maintain and monitor accurate job cost records for active and completed construction projects. Review daily, weekly, and monthly job cost transactions for accuracy and proper coding. Analyze labor, equipment, subcontractor, material, and overhead costs against budgets and estimates. Investigate job cost variances and communicate findings to project managers and operational leadership. Ensure timely processing of cost transfers, accruals, and project adjustments. Financial Reporting & Analysis Prepare monthly work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and profitability analyses. Assist in month-end and year-end close processes related to project accounting. Produce project-level financial reports including earned revenue, margin analysis, production tracking, and forecast updates. Support forecasting and budgeting processes for construction operations. Monitor committed costs and estimate-to-complete projections. Operational Support Work closely with project managers, estimators, dispatch, payroll, and operations teams to ensure accurate financial reporting. Assist field personnel with cost coding, purchase order procedures, and project documentation requirements. Support operational leaders in understanding project financial performance and key cost drivers. Promote consistency in job cost procedures across multiple business units or locations. Compliance & Controls Ensure compliance with company accounting policies and internal controls. Assist with audit requests, contract reviews, and documentation support. Verify proper treatment of retainage, change orders, subcontractor billings, and project closeouts. Maintain accurate supporting documentation for all project-related accounting activity. Qualifications 3+ years of progressive accounting or job costing experience within the construction, highway, paving, heavy civil, or related industries strongly preferred. Extensive hands-on experience with construction job costing, project accounting, and operational financial reporting is valued more heavily than formal education. Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, construction management, or related field preferred but not required. Strong understanding of construction accounting principles, including WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, and project profitability analysis. Experience working in fast-paced, decentralized construction or field operations environments. Proficiency with construction ERP/accounting systems preferred, but Microsoft Excel a must. Ability to communicate effectively with both operational and financial personnel. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving capabilities. Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines independently. Preferred Experience Experience in decentralized or multi-entity construction organizations. Familiarity with heavy highway, asphalt, pavement preservation, or infrastructure construction operations. Exposure to equipment costing, production reporting, and field operations accounting. Experience with Viewpoint, Spectrum, Foundation, CMiC, or similar construction ERP systems.
