Job Title:
Junior Accountant Job Description The Junior Accountant supports the financial management of projects by assisting with job costing, billing, budgeting, and month-end close activities. This role works closely with Project Managers and the Accounting team to ensure accurate financial reporting, precise cost tracking, and adherence to company policies and internal controls. It offers an excellent opportunity for an early-career accounting professional to grow in a project-based accounting environment within a healthy and expanding business. Responsibilities Assist with project setup in the accounting system, including establishing budgets, cost codes, and job numbers. Track and maintain job costs, ensuring that all project-related expenses are coded accurately and entered in a timely manner. Support project billing activities by preparing invoices, assembling backup documentation, and coordinating customer submissions. Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable functions related to project work, including invoice entry, payment tracking, and basic collections support. Help reconcile project costs to the general ledger and investigate variances or discrepancies as they arise. Support month-end close processes by preparing journal entries, performing account reconciliations, and assisting with related reporting tasks. Maintain organized project documentation, including contracts, purchase orders, and change orders, to support accurate financial records. Partner with Project Managers to respond to financial questions and provide basic cost and budget reporting for active projects. Assist with audit requests by gathering documentation and ensuring compliance with internal controls and company policies. Perform ad hoc financial analysis and reporting as needed to support project and accounting decision-making. Essential Skills 0-3 years of accounting experience, with exposure to project or cost accounting considered a plus. Experience in accounting functions such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, and billing, preferably within a project-driven or construction-related environment. Basic understanding of GAAP principles and their application in day-to-day accounting activities. Proficiency in Excel, including use of formulas, lookups, and preferably pivot tables for analysis and reporting. Familiarity with accounting or ERP systems, with experience in platforms such as SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Sage, or QuickBooks considered beneficial. Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in financial data entry, coding, and reconciliation. Effective organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks in a deadline-driven environment. Strong verbal and written communication skills and a willingness to collaborate cross-functionally with Project Managers and other teams. Additional Skills & Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or active progress toward completing such a degree. Project or cost accounting experience, particularly in a construction or project-based industry, is highly desirable. Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, and billing processes within a project environment. Experience with ERP or accounting systems such as SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Sage, or QuickBooks is a plus. Experience with Vista accounting software is extremely nice to have. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and provide clear financial information to non-financial stakeholders. Interest in growing a career in project-based accounting within a healthy, growing business that is expanding into new business lines such as data centers. Work Environment This is an in-office role with a Monday through Friday schedule during regular business hours. You will work closely with Project Managers and the Accounting team in a professional office setting that supports collaboration and ongoing learning. The organization operates as a healthy, growing business with expanding service lines, including emerging areas such as data centers, offering opportunities to gain experience in a dynamic, project-based environment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Edwardsville, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $27.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
