Job Description
Position Summary The Project Accountant is responsible for supporting the financial management of assigned construction projects. This role partners closely with Project Managers, Project Engineers, and the Accounting team to ensure accurate job cost tracking, billing, compliance, and financial reporting. The Project Accountant follows established accounting procedures and internal controls to support timely reporting, cost visibility, and overall project profitability.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Training:
High School business curriculum, GED, or equivalent combination of training and experience in accounting, finance, business or related field. Working knowledge of construction accounting concepts and documentation, including job cost accounting, billing methods, project close-out procedures, and ERP systems (Viewpoint preferred). Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify, research, and resolve discrepancies. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications, with the ability to prepare reconciliations, reports, financial analyses, and maintain databases. Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and organization. Strong written and verbal communication skills; professional, courteous, and effective when interacting with internal teams and external partners. Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.Essential Job Functions:
Serve as a key financial liaison between Project Managers, Project Engineers, Accounting, and other internal departments to clarify issues, resolve discrepancies, and support timely project execution. Maintain accurate and timely job cost data for assigned projects, ensuring proper coding, phase alignment, and compliance with internal controls. Prepare, review, and analyze job cost reports and financial data; identify cost variances and communicate findings to project and accounting leadership. Support project billing activities, including progress billing, T&M billing, certified payroll reporting, lien waivers, and customer-specific documentation requirements. Assist with accounts receivable and accounts payable processes related to project finances, including vendor setup, waiver collection, compliance tracking, and issue resolution. Support monthly project close activities, including reconciliations, accruals, journal entries, and review of batch or system exceptions. Support project setup, maintenance, and close-out within the accounting system (Viewpoint), ensuring accuracy of budgets, cost codes, subcontract documentation, COIs, and financial records. Prepare financial reports, maintain document tracking systems, and support audits, internal reviews, and continuous process improvement initiatives. Serve as a financial resource to Project Managers and Project Engineers regarding project cost controls, billing status, and accounting procedures. Attend staff, departmental, and other required meetings and training. Travel to client or prospect locations, conference, or other professional development and networking events.
