Construction Project Accountant

at Robert Half in Westmont, Illinois, United States Job Description Description We are looking for an experienced Construction Project Accounting Manager to support financial operations for active projects in Illinois. This role is suited for an accounting specialist with strong attention to detail who can oversee core reporting activities, strengthen accounting workflows, and collaborate effectively with project and operations teams. The ideal candidate brings strong construction industry knowledge, leadership capability, and a practical approach to improving financial processes.

Responsibilities:

• Manage month-end close activities for construction projects and related financial records, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
• Maintain the general ledger and prepare journal entries that properly reflect project costs, accruals, and other accounting activity.
• Reconcile accounts on a regular basis to verify balances, resolve discrepancies, and support the integrity of financial data.
• Assist with the preparation of internal and external financial reporting, including documentation needed for audits and compliance reviews.
• Partner with project managers and operational stakeholders to track job financial performance and provide clear accounting insight.
• Supervise or guide accounting staff, helping to prioritize work, improve consistency, and support team development.
• Identify inefficiencies in existing accounting procedures and implement practical process improvements that enhance accuracy and productivity.

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• At least 5 years of accounting experience within the construction industry.
• Minimum of 2 years of leadership or team oversight experience.
• Strong working knowledge of month-end close, general ledger management, account reconciliations, and journal entries.
• Experience supporting financial statement audits and preparing related documentation.
• Ability to evaluate current workflows and introduce effective process improvements.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work across departments.
