Job Description

The Accountant is responsible for ensuring the integrity of accounting information by researching account issues for compliance and by establishing quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting. Work involves maintaining financial records, analyzing accounts and other routine accounting documents. May assign, coordinate and direct the work of other account clerks and assists with accounts receivable. Performs independent judgment in accordance with established policies and procedures, rules and regulations.
Education Required:
Graduation from an accredited 4-year college or university. Area of Study (major)

Accounting or closely related field with a minimum of 24 semester hours accounting course work. Certification(s)

Valid LA Driver's License Years of Relevant Work Experience:
2 year's related-work in the field of professional accounting, auditing or financial management. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Other Job Specifications:
Knowledge of all accounting principles, practices & procedures and journal entry preparation Understanding of Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) Knowledge of account coding, bank reconciliations & data entry Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, procedures and process governing the receipt, custody, and expenditures of governmental monies Strong interpersonal and organizational skills Team-oriented with a strong sense of ownership and accountability Strong verbal and written communication skills Solid analytical skills with a thoughtful and open-minded approach to problem solving Proficient in MS Office, Word, Excel, etc. Highly motivated with the ability to multi-task and remain organized in a fast-paced environment Work with internal and external audits to ensure compliance Ability to apply accounting principles to fiscal and accounting record maintenance Ability to effectively communicate clearly, both orally and in writing Ability to use a computer, modern office methods and equipment Ability to work cooperatively with persons at all levels in the organization and render support services when needed Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion with sensitive or confidential issues and/or personnel matters
Essential Functions and Duties:
Assist in preparation of monthly financial statements including balance sheets and cash flow. Ensures the reconciliation of BREC cash accounts. Post accounting journals to general ledgers daily and corrects any coding or date errors Assist with the reconciliation of balance sheet accounts (other than cash) for all funds. Manages and oversees collection of receivables. Works with internal and external auditors during annual external audit and periodic internal audits. Identify and research control gaps, irregularities and errors; recommends corrective actions and suggest improvement. Attend staff or other management meetings and provide suggestions to accounting related issues. Examine routine accounting documents and check for accuracy of entries to include cash receipts, bank entries, and reimbursements. May assist with budget preparation.
Secondary Job Duties:
Cross trains and substitutes as Senior Accountant. May assign, review and coordinate the work of other account clerks. Prepares special reports for Auditors and Finance Director. Other duties as assigned. Full time, minimum 8 hours a day, 5 days a week; occasional overtime; one hour lunch break daily, other breaks as needed.
