The Monahan Company | The Monahan Company | Family‑owned, 100+ years Position Overview The Senior Accountant plays a key hands‑on role within the accounting function, supporting full‑cycle accounting, job cost reporting, and monthly WIP for an established and growing commercial construction firm. This position partners closely with the Controller and Project Managers to ensure accurate project financials, timely close cycles, and reliable reporting to support decision‑making and future growth. This role is ideal for a strong accountant who enjoys working close to operations, understands how financials connect to project performance, and values stability, collaboration, and accountability within a tight‑knit organization. Key Responsibilities

• Month‑End Close & Financial Reporting
• Execute month‑end close activities, including:
• Journal entries
• Account reconciliations
• Variance analysis
• Supporting schedules
• Prepare and support monthly WIP schedules and percentage‑of‑completion calculations
• Assist with year‑end close activities and documentation
• Ensure financials are accurate, complete, and aligned with GAAP Job Cost Accounting & Project Support
• Maintain accurate job cost accounting across 10
• 50 active commercial construction projects
• Review budgets, change orders, and cost entries entered into Sage by Project Operations
• Generate and review project progress reports and flag discrepancies or inconsistencies
• Partner closely and in‑office with Project Managers on:
• Budget vs. actual tracking
• Change orders
• Cost‑to‑complete and margin analysis
• Support integrity of project data used for WIP and financial reporting Billing, AR & Cash Flow Support
• Prepare AIA billing and lien waiver documentation
• Support monitoring of receivables and billing accuracy
• Ensure billing aligns with contract terms and percentage‑of‑completion reporting
• Audit & External Support
• Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for:
• Tax filings
• External audit or review
• Work closely with the Executive Team to respond to third‑party requests Systems, Controls & Process Improvement
• Work within Sage 100 Contractor is highly preferred. Tech Savvy in learning new software if there is no experience with Sage 100.
• Ensure proper coding and documentation of transactions
• Assist with maintaining and strengthening internal controls
• Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and reporting processes
• Support technology‑driven improvements (including automation and AI tools where appropriate) and process improvements Collaboration & Team Support
• Lead and mentor other accounting team members in all aspects of accounting including GAAP.
• Support the Executive Team with ad‑hoc analysis and projects
• Participate in building scalable accounting processes as the company continues to grow Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
• 3-7+ years of progressive accounting experience; construction or project accounting experience preferred but not required
• Strong understanding of:
• Month‑end close
• Job cost accounting
• WIP and percentage‑of‑completion concepts
• Proficiency with Sage Contractor software strongly preferred (Sage 100, 300, or Intacct)
• Advanced Excel skills
• Detail‑oriented, organized, and accountable
