Job Summary:
The Senior Accountant is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the organization's financial records and supporting accurate, timely financial reporting. This position performs advanced accounting functions, oversees key accounting processes, ensures compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulations, and assists leadership with financial analysis and decision-making. The Senior Accountant works closely with internal departments, external auditors, and financial partners to support the organization's financial health and operational success.
Key Responsibilities:
General Accounting Maintain the general ledger and verify the accuracy of all financial transactions. Prepare and record journal entries, account reconciliations, and adjusting entries. Review and reconcile bank accounts, credit card accounts, and other balance sheet accounts. Monitor and maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules. Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting standards. Manage fund accounting, including tracking of restricted, temporarily restricted, and unrestricted assets. Work with the Professional Employee Organization (PEO) on payroll, unemployment, workers' compensation and employee benefits. Financial Reporting Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and supporting schedules. Analyze financial data and identify trends, variances, and opportunities for improvement. Assist with preparation of management reports and presentations for leadership and the Board of Directors. Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management activities. Audit and Compliance Coordinate annual financial audits and provide requested documentation to auditors. Assist with the preparation of tax filings, regulatory reports, and other compliance requirements. Maintain strong internal controls and recommend process improvements to strengthen financial operations. Ensure compliance with organizational policies and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Ensure accounting and finance practices are in compliance with any applicable grant or other funding source requirements. Accounts Payable and Receivable Oversight Review accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions for accuracy and completeness. Assist with invoicing for program services, submit documentation for government reimbursements and follow-through to ensure receipt of payment/reimbursement. Assist with cash management and monitoring and collection of outstanding receivables. Support month-end and year-end closing processes. Leadership and Collaboration Collaborate with leadership to improve financial systems and operational efficiencies. Provide guidance on accounting policies and best practices. Participate in special projects and strategic financial initiatives. Maintain a positive and solution-focused attitude.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field required. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative and team-oriented approach. Experience Minimum of five (5) years of progressive accounting experience. Experience preparing financial statements and performing account reconciliations. Experience with financial audits and regulatory compliance. Nonprofit accounting experience preferred. Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting standards. Proficiency in QuickBooks Online (QBO) and Microsoft Excel. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
