Job Description

Accountant - ( 26141451 ) MTHS has an opening for a full-time Accountant 2. This position works as a member of the accounting team and is responsible for accounting functions across the agency's multiple funding types, will oversee major accounting and reporting functions and will analyze accounting data to assess and improve the agency's financial operations. The ideal candidate is motivated, energetic, loves being part of a team and is excited about being a part of the Montana Historical Society.
Function:
Under the direction of the Fiscal Officer, this position is responsible for accounting for MTHS' multiple enterprise, governmental, federal grant, and private fund activities. Among other tasks, the ability to exercise sound accounting judgment, be detail oriented, have great time management skills, along with a welcoming and friendly attitude, is important to this position.
Other:

Representative Duties:
Prepare, examine, and analyze accounting and budget-related statements, reports, and supporting documents. Classify, record, and report financial operations by applying the theories of and principles of accounting. Identify, research, and resolve accounting discrepancies. Analyze, allocate, and monitor expenditures and revenues. Assist with the development of accounting procedures. Maintain accounting ledgers, journals, registers, etc. Reconcile statements with records and accounting transactions. Prepare financial records in accordance with GAAP, statutory or federal requirements and the State's accounting policies. Responsible for accounting functions for multiple funding types. Oversees two or more major accounting and report functions. Analyze accounting data to assess and improve the agency's financial operations. Prepare, maintain, and report grants. Ensure compliance with conditions of grants by monitoring and analyzing agreements, contracts, expenses, and activities. Prepare financial and audit reports of grants and contracts. Obtain and analyze project costs. Advise individuals by interpreting federal and state government regulations. Review audit reports from federal, state, county or local units to identify noncompliance findings or other concerns. Prepare budget justifications, budgets revisions, and projected funding levels for federal grants.
Knowledge of:
Accounting theory, principles, and practices Microsoft Office suite products
Governmental Accounting Skills:
Excellent oral and written communication skills Effective time management and organizing skills Outstanding Excel skills Strong computer skills Ability to: Accurately perform accounting tasks Work independently and as a member of a 5-person accounting team
Education:
Bachelor's degree in accounting
Experience:
Two years of accounting experience Other combinations of education or experience may be considered
Preferred Experience:
Two years of governmental accounting experience
Hours of Operation:
The Montana Heritage Center operates seven days a week and is open all holidays except Thanksgiving and Christmas. As an employee of the Montana Historical Society your work hours may fall outside of a regular Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule.
