POSITION SUMMARY
We are currently recruiting a Staff Accountant. This full-time position pays $27.50 an hour and is in Asheville, NC.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Performs staff accountant duties including account analysis and reconciliation, transaction review, unclaimed property reporting, and other accounting-related duties. Reviews expense items for State, County, and Institutional funds and issues payments on a weekly basis. Ensures cash availability before release of checks, reviews vouchers for accuracy and compliance, uploads positive pay files, and processes check voids, stop payments, and reissues. Enters ACHs and wires for daily deposit requests and refund transmittals to third-party refund processor. Prepares Foundation reimbursement requests, payroll remittance checks, student refunds, and financial aid checks as requested in a timely manner. Maintains vendor W-1 forms, reviews expense items for sales and use tax and 1099 compliance, and prepares monthly sales and use tax payable check requests. Performs account analysis and reconciliations, including agency scholarships and accounts payable reconciliations. Reviews unreconciled payments, contacts payees to confirm receipt of payment, and minimizes the number of payments that must be escheated. Submits annual escheat report by the required deadline. Works closely with purchasing and other Business Office staff to communicate issues and resolve discrepancies to ensure accuracy of the general ledger and compliance with policies. Assists with preparation of financial statements, prepaid and accrual lead sheets, and associated audit documentation. Assists in internal control over financial reporting and compliance. Supports the Controller and Assistant Controller with research and projects. Contributes to the College Vision, Mission, Values, and RISE statement. Supports workforce diversity in all its aspects. Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to apply generally accepted accounting principles. Familiarity with state sales and use tax laws. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing. Ability to compile, review, and reconcile complex financial data for accuracy, completeness, and compliance. Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply related federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations. Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field is required. Two years of full-time or equivalent accounts payable, accounting, or auditing work experience is required. Experience ensuring compliance with tax reporting and institutional policies is required. Experience with financial systems such as Colleague is preferred. Work experience in higher education, governmental, or non-profit organizations is preferred. Advanced Excel experience is preferred. Proficiency in a foreign language such as Spanish, an East Slavic language, and/or American Sign Language is preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Standard hours of work Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, with occasional overtime. Travel may be required. Work is performed in a routine office environment with no exposure to hazardous conditions. Physical demands are usually limited to sitting or standing, and may require some stooping, lifting, or carrying objects of light weight.
