With a team of fewer than 25 professionals, we offer a collaborative environment where you can work directly with clients, build technical depth across engagements, and grow into a long-term leadership role. We're looking for an experienced Staff Accountant/Bookkeeper who is fluent in QuickBooks Online and excited to learn client engagements from start to finish—cleanup, monthly close, reporting, and proactive client communication. This is a great fit for someone who is interested in growing beyond day-to-day bookkeeping into higher-level accounting, advisory, and team leadership. While this role is primarily client accounting services, you will work closely with our tax team to support income tax-basis engagements (including maintaining fixed asset detail in the tax software and confirming retained earnings ties). Over time, there is an opportunity to progress into tax return preparation and broader client advisory work. Key Responsibilities Manage client accounting engagements in QuickBooks Online, including transaction coding, bank/credit card reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance. Perform monthly and quarterly close activities: adjusting entries, accruals, and account analyses. Prepare and deliver client-ready financial statements and management reports (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow insights as applicable). Clean up and streamline client books, including identifying errors, fixing coding issues, and improving chart of accounts/classes. Coordinate with clients to gather missing information, explain questions clearly, and keep timelines on track. Collaborate with firm leadership to improve workflow, documentation, and repeatable processes across engagements. Support special projects such as catch-up bookkeeping, integrations/app implementation, and advisory support. Coordinate with the tax team on income tax-basis engagements, including maintaining fixed asset detail in the tax software and helping confirm retained earnings ties. Required Qualifications 2+ years of hands-on bookkeeping and/or staff accounting experience (public accounting firm experience is a plus). High confidence in QuickBooks Online (setup, transaction workflows, reconciliations, reporting, and troubleshooting). Strong understanding of accounting fundamentals (debits/credits, account types, reconciliations, adjusting entries). Comfort learning and working across multiple client systems and apps (expense tools, bill pay, payroll, POS, etc.). Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage deadlines across multiple clients. Professional communication skills and a strong service mindset—responsive, clear, and solutions-oriented. Desire to grow, interested in feedback, documenting work, and steadily increasing responsibility (including exposure to tax-basis engagements and advisory work). Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have) QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor certification. Strong Excel skills. Experience with catch-up/cleanup projects and preparing books for tax return work. Familiarity with income tax-basis financial reporting and/or maintaining fixed assets in a tax software environment. Experience with sales tax, 1099s, payroll coordination, and/or multi-entity clients.
Interest in advisory work:
budgeting, cash flow support, KPI reporting, and client process improvements. What We Offer Direct access to firm leadership and visibility into how engagements run from onboarding to deliverables. A clear path to expand your role—more complex clients, review responsibilities, and advisory work as you're ready. A supportive, team-based culture in a smaller firm where learning and initiative are valued. Training, feedback, and the opportunity to build leadership skills over time. Competitive compensation and benefits. Schedule & Work Environment Full-time position based in Wilmington, NC. Busy-season hours may increase based on deadlines; we emphasize planning and communication to keep workloads manageable. We offer the opportunity for off-season four-day weeks or other hybrid arrangements In-office is preferred, but hybrid may be considered based on experience and firm needs.
