Job Description

Accounting Assistant Assists the Director of Accounting in reporting of Catholic Medical Center's Financial Operations. Supports the main purpose of the accounting department in maintaining sound financial policies for the system. Interacts annually and as required with independent audit firm for financial statement preparation, pension audit, internal financial statement preparation, monthly variance reporting, capital budgeting and long term projection modeling.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Working independently, and under the general supervision of the Director of Accounting and within established policies and procedures, the incumbent may be asked to perform any/all of the following functions: Verifies and records investment activity including: separation of board designated, temporarily restricted and permanently restricted funds, reconciliation to G/L balances, review of investment returns and income allocations. Prepares analysis of the reserve for Blue Cross Medical expense. Prepares required work papers for external audit of the Defined Benefit and Workers Compensation Plans. Prepares balance sheet, income and expense account reconciliation on a monthly basis. Maintains ongoing documentation of the account history and verifies the validity of its contents. Assists with the preparation of year-end audit schedules. Prepares required work papers and responds to questions from auditors. Prepares, inputs, and logs standard, recurring, and general journal entries on a monthly basis. Prepares monthly A/R aged summary by financial class and reconciles to the general ledger. Prepares billings to clients for all non-patient AR and monitors their receivables. Prepares corporate federal and state tax returns. Supports and participates in both operating and capital budget preparation processes. Assists in financial analysis of various accounting applications. Identifies and corrects problems and recommends corrective measures. Works with specific assignments under supervisor's direction on evaluating current procedures used by accounting personnel to determine ways of increasing productivity. Works within policies, procedures and protocols as they relate to the job. Participates in appropriate role in disasters, fire drills, fires and other emergency situations. Exercises care in the operation and use of equipment and reference materials. Performs routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continued functioning of equipment. Maintains work areas in a clean and organized manner. Complies with all established company and departmental policies and procedures. Ensures confidentiality of employee, legal, client/patient, budget and all company matters. Maintains good communications, establishes and maintains positive working relationship with co-workers and department heads. Performs similar or related duties as assigned or directed.
Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday, day shift. Overtime routinely required.
Education:
Bachelor's degree required; Degree in accounting, MBA or CPA preferred.
Experience:
Five (5) years' experience required. Prior public accounting experience with non-profit healthcare institutions strongly desired.
