not exactly inspiring. At Pittman & Brooks, we're looking for a tax accountant who wants something different: a boutique CPA firm with deep client relationships, real career growth, and the chance to build broad experience instead of getting boxed into one narrow lane. We are not trying to become the biggest firm in the region. We are not chasing private equity. We are growing organically, intentionally, and sustainably — by doing excellent work, taking care of clients, and creating a place where talented people want to stay. If you are an experienced tax professional who is ready for more ownership, more variety, more client contact, and more room to grow, we should talk. Why this role is different At a large regional firm, it is easy to become one piece of a very large machine. You may prepare returns for clients you never meet, specialize so narrowly that your growth slows, or wait for opportunities that always seem one promotion cycle away. At Pittman & Brooks, you will see the whole picture. You will work directly with shareholders. You will prepare and review meaningful tax work. You will participate in planning conversations. You will build relationships with clients. You will research real issues, solve real problems, and expand your technical and advisory skills in ways that are hard to get inside a larger, more layered firm. We are big enough to serve complex clients well, and small enough that your work matters. About Pittman & Brooks Pittman & Brooks is one of Portland's most respected and forward-thinking CPA firms. Our team has helped us consistently earn recognition as one of Oregon's best small businesses to work for, as well as one of the top accounting firms in the country. We care deeply about technical excellence, but we care just as much about how we work together. We believe tax work can be demanding without being joyless. We believe clients deserve proactive, thoughtful service. And we believe a great firm is built by growing people, not burning them out. What you'll do As a Tax Accountant, you will work closely with our shareholders and team members on tax preparation, tax planning, client service, and special projects. Your responsibilities will include:
Preparing individual, corporate, partnership, and trust tax returns Adjusting trial balances for tax preparation Supporting tax planning for individuals and business clients Researching tax and accounting issues Responding to federal, state, and local tax notices Communicating with clients and helping build long-term relationships Assisting shareholders with special projects and advisory work Bringing ideas, curiosity, and good judgment to the table Who we're looking for You might be a great fit if you have: 5-8 years of strong tax experience A bachelor's degree in accounting CPA certification, or meaningful progress toward it, preferred Experience preparing individual, corporate, partnership, and trust returns Experience with tax planning, tax research, and adjusted trial balances Strong written and verbal communication skills Excellent judgment, integrity, confidentiality, and follow-through The ability to manage deadlines without losing sight of quality A genuine interest in serving clients well Curiosity, critical thinking, and a desire to keep growing Experience with Lacerte, QuickBooks, CCH Axcess Suite, and Engagement is a plus. What you'll find here We offer: Competitive compensation Flexible schedules Generous PTO 401(k) with employer contribution Medical, dental, and vision insurance Life insurance Tax season bonuses Professional development support A modern office environment A family-friendly, human-centered culture The opportunity to grow with an independent boutique firm A note for accountants looking for something different If you are tired of feeling like your career is happening on someone else's timeline, this role may be a better fit. If you want more client interaction, more technical variety, more access to firm leadership, and more opportunity to shape your own path, Pittman & Brooks offers that. We are looking for someone who wants to do excellent work, keep learning, build lasting relationships, and grow with a firm that is growing the right way.
