Hybrid (4 days in office initially, with increased remote flexibility over time) The Maine Community College System (MCCS) is seeking a temporary Accountant to support financial operations and processes during an extended leave of absence period. This role requires a detail-oriented professional who can step in quickly, work independently, and contribute to maintaining continuity, accuracy, and efficiency across accounting functions. Under the direction of the Comptroller, this position will assist with general accounting activities, reconciliations, and process improvement efforts for the MCCS System Office and The Foundation for Maine's Community Colleges. Key Responsibilities Support general accounting functions, including reconciliations, journal entries, and financial record maintenance. Compile, reconcile and maintain monthly bank records for MCCS system wide, foundation and OPEB bank accounts. Monthly reconciliation of Inter Campus Charges (ICC) Record monthly payroll entries PCARD monthly reconciliation and journal entries Provide support during audits, including preparing schedules and gathering required documentation. Collaborate with finance staff and cross-functional teams to ensure smooth day-to-day operations. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field and/or up to eight years of relevant experience; Preferred Qualifications Experience in general accounting or financial operations in a fast-paced environment. Ability to adapt quickly to new systems and processes with minimal supervision. Experience supporting process improvements or documentation efforts. Prior exposure to audits, public sector, or higher education environments is a plus. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of accounting principles and financial processes. Strong attention to detail and accuracy when handling financial data. Analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret financial information. Proficiency in Excel and accounting systems; ERP experience preferred. Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines in a team-oriented environment. Effective communication skills for working with internal teams and external partners.
