We help business owners gain clarity, improve financial systems, manage cash flow, plan for taxes, and make better strategic decisions through integrated bookkeeping, tax preparation, tax planning, financial reporting, budgeting, and advisory services. We are a fully remote firm focused on providing high-quality financial support to clients who need more than basic compliance work. Our goal is to help clients understand their numbers, stabilize operations, and build stronger businesses. Position Overview Lucerna is seeking a part-time Accounting Operations Associate to support our bookkeeping, tax preparation, financial reporting, and advisory workflows. This role is ideal for someone who wants broad exposure to small business accounting and finance, including bookkeeping, monthly close, tax preparation, budgeting, forecasting, tax planning, and client support. Key Responsibilities Bookkeeping & Monthly Accounting Assist with monthly bookkeeping and account reconciliations. Prepare monthly financial statements, including Profit & Loss statements and Balance Sheets. Review transaction coding for accuracy and consistency. Assist with month-end close procedures. Identify unusual transactions, missing information, or potential accounting issues. Support cleanup projects and historical bookkeeping reviews. Tax Preparation & Compliance Assist with preparation of individual and business tax returns, including: Form 1040 Form 1065 partnership returns Form 1120S S corporation returns Form 1120 corporate returns Potentially Form 990 nonprofit returns Assist with gathering, organizing, and reviewing client tax documents. Prepare basic tax workpapers and supporting schedules. Assist with non-income tax filings, including sales tax returns and other compliance forms. Support tax planning projects and estimated tax payment calculations as needed. CFO Advisory, Budgeting & Forecasting Support Assist with preparing operating budgets and cash flow forecasts. Help update financial models and client reporting templates. Support variance analysis and financial reporting packages. Assist with organizing client data for CFO advisory meetings. Help prepare schedules related to owner compensation, tax reserves, cash flow, and financial performance. Administrative & Operations Support Assist with client follow-ups and document requests. Help maintain internal task tracking systems and workflow updates. Support ad hoc accounting, tax, and operational projects. Assist with form preparation, client onboarding, and internal process improvement. Work closely with firm leadership to improve efficiency, accuracy, and client service. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Experience with QuickBooks Online. Experience preparing or assisting with tax returns. Strong understanding of bookkeeping, reconciliations, and financial statements. Ability to work independently in a remote environment. Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines. Comfortable learning new software, systems, and processes. Strong written communication skills. Willingness to support both accounting production work and operational tasks. Preferred Qualifications Experience with Drake Tax software. Experience preparing business tax returns, especially Forms 1065, 1120S, and 1120. Familiarity with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning, or advisory services. Experience with sales tax filings or other non-income tax compliance. Master's degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or a related field. CPA, Enrolled Agent, or CPA candidate preferred. Experience working with small businesses, professional service firms, or closely held companies. Interest in tax planning, CFO advisory, and full-cycle small business financial management. Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, reliable, curious, and eager to learn. This person wants to understand the full financial picture of a small business—not just one isolated part of the process. They should be interested in learning how bookkeeping connects to financial reporting, how financial reporting connects to forecasting, how forecasting connects to tax planning, and how all of those areas ultimately impact the business owner's decisions. This role is a strong fit for someone who wants to grow into a well-rounded accounting and advisory professional. Schedule & Work Environment Fully remote position. Part-time role with an expected minimum of 20 hours per week. Maximum expected schedule of approximately 30 hours per week. Flexible scheduling may be available, but availability during standard business hours is preferred. Additional hours may be available during tax season or periods of increased client demand. Compensation Compensation will be based on experience, qualifications, and skill level. This role is expected to be hourly, with opportunities for increased responsibility and compensation as the firm grows.
