We take pride in building real relationships with our clients — not just filing returns and moving on. We operate lean, move efficiently, and genuinely invest in the people on our team. Our affiliated firm, Thomas Smith Advisors, gives us additional depth, resources, and shared best practices as we continue to grow. The Role We're looking for an experienced CPA who is sharp on tax preparation, comfortable working directly with clients, and ready to grow with us. The majority of your work will be preparing and filing individual tax returns (1040s), with a meaningful mix of partnership (1065) and S-corp (1120S) work as well. This role is client-facing. You'll interact with clients directly — often in person, increasingly via phone and video as we shift more of our workflow to remote. You take pride in accuracy, communicate proactively, and know how to explain tax situations to clients who aren't accountants. What You'll Do Tax Preparation & Filing Prepare and file individual returns — this is the core of the role Handle partnership, S-corp and C-corp returns with accuracy and confidence Manage your own workflow and deadlines across peak season and off-season filing Review prior-year returns and identify planning opportunities before you file Client Interaction Serve as the primary point of contact for your assigned client base Conduct client meetings in person and remotely to gather documents and review returns Explain complex tax situations in plain language — clients should leave the conversation informed, not confused Respond to client questions with professionalism and appropriate urgency Quality & Process Maintain a high standard of accuracy — you own the quality of your work Document client notes, file status, and follow-ups in our practice management system Flag issues proactively — if something looks off, say so before it becomes a problem What We're Looking For Must-Haves Active CPA license in good standing 7+ years of public accounting experience with a heavy 1040 focus Hands-on experience with corporate returns Comfortable working directly with clients — in person and remotely Organized, deadline-driven, and accountable without being micromanaged Strong Differentiators Familiarity with ProSeries tax prep software Experience at a regional or independent CPA firm (not just large national firms) Comfort adapting to new technology, workflows, and practice management tools Existing ties to the Triad area Work Schedule & Location We operate across two offices — Winston-Salem and Greensboro — and we're flexible on home base. Here's how the schedule breaks down: Peak Season In-office, Jan - Apr. This is when we're all heads-down together. Off-Season Sporadic in-office as needed; otherwise remote-friendly. We care about the work getting done, not where you sit. What We Offer $75,000 - $95,000 cash compensation Medical, dental and vision insurance Flexible schedule and genuine remote flexibility in the off-season A firm small enough that your work is visible and your contributions matter Collaborative team across the Triad with real support during busy season Exposure to a well-run, growing practice with a long-term track record
