Job Description
Our Story This is an established, family-owned accounting firm with a loyal client base built over decades. The founder is retiring and passing the torch to her daughter — who brings fresh energy and entrepreneurial drive to something that already has deep roots. The work is here. The clients are here. We just need the right person to help lead the next chapter. We're Going to Be Honest With You This is not a polished corporate job posting. We are a small, family-founded firm in the middle of a meaningful transition — and we need the right person to help us get it right. The gap between where we are and where we're going is real. We're not going to pretend otherwise. We are not looking for someone to come in, keep their head down, and do what they're told. We are looking for a builder. A fixer. Someone who looks at a challenge and leans in instead of backing away. If that sounds exhausting to you, this is not your role. If it sounds like exactly what you've been waiting for — keep reading. What You'll Actually Be Doing This role is two things at once — and both matter equally: 1. Be the Technical Anchor Oversee and review the accounting work product leaving this firm — bookkeeping, payroll, tax preparation, financial statements Establish quality control standards and make sure work going out the door is accurate and defensible Identify gaps in current processes and fix them, one at a time Be the person the team turns to when they hit a wall 2. Be the Mentor and Co-Builder Mentor the owner directly — she is sharp, driven, and learning fast, but needs a trusted technical partner by her side Help design and implement systems, workflows, and standard operating procedures from the ground up Lead the adoption of modern tools including AI-powered accounting software and automation Help define roles and responsibilities across a small staff Be a real voice in the direction of the firm — this is a partnership, not just a job Who You Are You have solid accounting experience — we value depth over years, and will absolutely consider someone earlier in their career who has the right drive and skillset A CPA license is a plus, not a requirement. What matters is that you actually know how to do the work and can prove it You've built something before — a process, a department, a team — and you know what that takes You communicate clearly and directly. You don't hide problems; you surface them and solve them You're comfortable with ambiguity. There is no perfectly organized desk waiting for you here You get energy from teaching others, not gatekeeping knowledge You believe small businesses deserve real financial expertise, not just tax season service What You Won't Find Here A bureaucratic chain of command that slows everything down A boss who micromanages or is too proud to learn Resistance to new ideas or modern tools A dead-end role with no growth — you'll help define what this firm becomes What You Will Find Here An owner who is coachable, committed, and not too proud to say she needs help Real authority to make decisions and drive change — not a suggestion box A client base already in place — you're not starting from zero Flexible schedule and hybrid work options for the right person Compensation that reflects your experience and what you bring — let's have that conversation The rare opportunity to leave a real mark on something being built from the ground up How to Apply Don't send a generic resume and cover letter. Tell us who you are. Tell us about something you built, fixed, or turned around. Tell us why this kind of challenge appeals to you. The right person will know this posting was written for them. Send your resume and a brief personal note to: jennifer@migkc.com We respond to every application personally. Equal Opportunity Employer MIG Accounting is an equal opportunity employer.
