Job Summary:
MJL is currently looking for a full-time Senior Staff Accountant to join our team. The Senior Staff Accountant will be responsible for supporting the firm's accounting services for a diverse client base. This position involves performing accounting functions, preparing financial statements, managing client accounts, and ensuring the accuracy of financial records. The Senior Staff Accountant will work closely with managers and other team members to provide high-quality services, deliver timely results, and assist in the overall management of client accounting functions. The ideal candidate will have strong technical accounting knowledge, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple clients and meet deadlines efficiently.
Key Responsibilities:
Client Account Management:
Assist with the preparation and maintenance of client financial records, including general ledger entries, journal entries, and account reconciliations. Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP or other applicable standards. Review clients' financial records and transactions to ensure accuracy and compliance. Work closely with clients to understand their accounting needs and provide proactive advice.
Accounting and Financial Reporting:
Prepare and analyze financial reports for clients, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements. Assist with budgeting and forecasting processes for clients, offering insights into financial performance and trends. Review accounting transactions to ensure proper classification and adherence to company policies and accounting principles.
Internal Controls and Compliance:
Ensure that clients' accounting records comply with relevant regulations and internal controls. Assist in implementing and improving accounting processes and procedures to enhance efficiency and reduce errors. Identify discrepancies in client financial data and provide solutions to resolve issues in a timely manner.
Team Collaboration and Support:
Collaborate with team members and managers to complete accounting projects and meet deadlines. Provide guidance and support to junior accountants and staff, reviewing their work and helping with their professional development. Assist in the training and on-boarding of new staff members.
Client Communication:
Serve as a point of contact for clients regarding accounting services, financial reports, and questions related to their accounts. Maintain positive relationships with clients and respond to any inquiries promptly and professionally. Work with clients to gather necessary documents and information for financial reporting and year-end processes.
Process Improvement:
Assist in identifying and implementing improvements to accounting systems, software, and processes to increase efficiency and effectiveness. Stay updated on accounting software updates and emerging accounting trends to recommend improvements to clients' operations.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA (Certified Public Accountant) candidate or license preferred.
Experience:
4+ years of experience in public accounting with a focus on accounting services, such as bookkeeping, financial reporting, or client account management. Experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Oracle PeopleSoft, Xero, Sage) and Microsoft Excel.
Skills:
Strong knowledge of GAAP and accounting principles. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines. Strong attention to detail and analytical skills to identify and resolve discrepancies. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with clients and team members. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing client relationships with professionalism and efficiency.
Work Environment:
Primarily an office-based role with occasional client meetings or site visits as necessary. The position may offer flexibility in terms of remote work or hybrid arrangements depending on firm policies. This job description should not be considered all-inclusive.
