Job Description
Description We are looking for a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join a healthcare-focused nonprofit organization in Chicago, Illinois. This Contract to permanent opportunity is ideal for an accounting specialist who can manage core close activities, support compliance reporting, and work effectively in a hybrid environment. The role offers a mix of onsite and remote work after initial onboarding and requires strong nonprofit accounting, audit, communication skills, sound judgment, and advanced Excel capability.
Responsibilities:
Manage month-end closing tasks by preparing journal entries, reviewing account activity, and helping ensure timely completion of financial reporting.
Perform detailed reconciliations for bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, and general ledger activity to maintain accurate records.
Support audit preparation by organizing documentation, responding to requests, and assisting with schedules needed for external review.
Contribute to preparation related to Form 990 and other nonprofit financial reporting requirements.
Maintain accounting records connected to grants and restricted funding, with careful attention to fund accounting practices.
Use accounting systems and advanced Excel functions to analyze data, prepare reports, and improve accuracy in financial processes.
Communicate clearly with internal stakeholders regarding assignments, deadlines, and the status of deliverables.
Follow the hybrid work schedule, including onsite training during the first week and regular in-office collaboration thereafter.
The salary range for this position is $33/hr. to $35/hr . Benefits available to contract/temporary professionals, include medical, vision, dental, and life and disability insurance. Experience in staff accounting with hands-on responsibility for journal entries, general ledger activity, and month-end close.
Strong reconciliation skills, including bank reconciliations and balance sheet account analysis.
Knowledge of nonprofit fund accounting; experience with grant-related accounting is strongly preferred.
Familiarity with audit support activities and exposure to Form 990 preparation or related nonprofit reporting.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including lookups, conditional formulas, sorting, pivot tables, and filtering large data sets.
Experience with Sage MIP accounting software is preferred.
Background in nonprofit healthcare or a related healthcare services environment is preferred.
Clear and detail-oriented English communication skills with the ability to clearly discuss assignments and completion status.
