Job Overview A General Ledger (GL) Accountant is responsible for maintaining and ensuring the accuracy of a company's financial records. This role involves preparing journal entries, reconciling accounts, and managing month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes. The GL Accountant reviews financial data for completeness and compliance with accounting standards, investigates discrepancies, and supports internal and external audits. Additionally, the position requires collaboration with other departments to ensure proper financial reporting, adherence to internal controls, and continuous process improvements. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of accounting principles (such as GAAP or IFRS) are essential for success in this role. Duties Prepare, review, and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and regulatory standards. Manage general ledger activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and ledger maintenance using accounting software such as PeopleSoft, Xero, Sage, or QuickBooks. Conduct balance sheet reconciliations to ensure accuracy of all accounts and resolve discrepancies promptly. Oversee accounts payable and receivable processes to ensure timely payments and collections while maintaining compliance with internal controls. Support internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation and ensuring adherence to SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act) compliance requirements. Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis to support strategic decision-making. Ensure accurate tax reporting by managing tax-related entries and maintaining compliance with relevant laws such as securities law or estate law when applicable. Participate in regulatory reporting, financial report writing, and interpretation of financial data for management review. Collaborate with cross-functional teams on projects involving non-profit accounting, governmental accounting, or private equity transactions as needed. Mentor junior team members on accounting best practices, software tools like Microsoft Excel or Quicken, and complex financial concepts. Skills Strong knowledge of
GAAP, SOX
compliance, technical accounting standards, and securities law regulations. Proficiency in accounting software such as PeopleSoft, Xero, Sage, QuickBooks, or similar platforms. Experience with corporate finance functions including budgeting, cash flow analysis, account reconciliation, and financial statement preparation. Familiarity with non-profit accounting principles and governmental accounting standards is a plus. Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data accurately. Skilled in financial report writing and presentation for diverse audiences. Ability to perform detailed account analysis using double-entry bookkeeping principles—debits & credits—and accrual accounting methods. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks such as bank reconciliation, journal entries, audit preparation, and regulatory reporting simultaneously. Effective communication skills for mentoring team members and collaborating across departments on financial projects.
