Controller or Finance Manager Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Accountant to manage financial operations for our heavy highway civil construction projects in Houston, Texas. The Accountant will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, processing accounts payable and receivable, managing payroll, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with company policies and relevant regulations. The ideal candidate will have experience in the construction industry and a strong understanding of cost accounting and project financials.
Key Responsibilities:
Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger activities. Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports. Process payroll and ensure accurate reporting of employee benefits and taxes. Track and manage job costs, budgets, and forecasts for construction projects. Reconcile bank statements and monitor cash flow. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial and tax regulations. Assist with audits, both internal and external. Collaborate with project managers and operations staff to ensure accurate financial reporting. Strictly adhere to confidentiality of personnel and company information. Perform other administrative and operational duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Minimum 3-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in the construction industry. Strong understanding of GAAP, job cost accounting, and financial reporting. Proficient in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, Viewpoint, ComputerEase) and Microsoft Office Suite. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
This position requires frequent sitting for extended periods of time, as well as frequent standing, walking, speaking, hearing, reading, and close visual attention to computer screens and printed materials. It involves extended periods of working at a computer workstation, including repetitive hand and wrist movements for typing and mouse use. Frequent hand-eye coordination and fine motor control are necessary for handling documents and operating office equipment. Occasional physical activity includes bending, reaching, and moving materials. The role may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The position requires sustained focus, postural endurance, and the ability to maintain composure particularly in high-pressure settings, which can occur frequently. The primary work environment is an indoor, climate-controlled space. Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions and standard environmental elements such as dust, odors, or temperature fluctuations may occur during site visits.
Preferred Skills:
Experience with TXDOT or government-funded project accounting. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or working toward CPA designation. Familiarity with construction management software such as Procore or HCSS. Knowledge of prevailing wage and certified payroll reporting using LCPtracker.
